The original decorator of the apartment was Emile Kuri, a set designer and
decorator for many Disney films and also the decorator and designer of many of
the Main Street USA buildings. The apartment was located on the 2nd story and
was built so Walt Disney could oversee the construction of Disneyland, and later
he used it to entertain guests or family members. The apartment and adjoining
upstairs patio were quite small, so Walt and Roy commissioned another apartment
to built above the Pirates of the Caribbean in New Orleans Square.
Unfortunately, Walt died before the apartment was completed. It was later turned
into The
Disney Gallery after sitting empty for many years.
A light in the upstairs window is kept on in memory of Walt. Tours of the
Apartment are strictly off-limits to the general public. Many of the original
pieces have been replaced over the years by replicas, but the Disney Imagineers
and designers have tried to remain true to the original look and design of the
apartment. Only one photo of Walt inside the apartment was taken for publication
in National Geographic (below).
