Various attractions have
been part of Tomorrowland since the opening of Disneyland in 1955. A
major renovation completed in 1959 added The Matterhorn
(now part of Fantasyland), Submarine Voyage, The
Disneyland Monorail and the renovation of The Skyway.
Another major renovation in 1967 added The Peoplemover, Carousel
of Progress, Flight to the Moon (a re-worked "Rocket to
the Moon"), Rocket Jets and a new film, "America the
Beautiful" in the Circlevision theater.
In 1974, America Sings replaced the Carousel of
Progress, and Star Tours replaced Adventure Thru Innerspace
in 1987. A 1998 update to Tomorrowland replaced the Peoplemover
attraction with the Rocket Rods, and the Carousel
Theater became Innoventions.
In
September of that same year, The Submarine Voyage was closed. In the
year 2000, Chevron sponsored the new Autopia. The Fantasyland and
Tomorrowland tracks were connected, and new cars, a new queue area,
and a new show building were installed. Announced in April of 2001,
The Rocket Rods would not be returning after a long
downtime. High expense and unreliability were the blame, but no
official reason for their closure was given. Space Mountain has
reopened, and Buzz Lightyear's Astro Blasters currently is housed in
the space of the previous attraction, Circlevision360. The
Disneyland Monorail underwent extensive refurbs as part of the
Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage, and 3 new Mark 6 trains have come
online in 2009: Monorail Red, Blue and Purple.
Rumors abound and we may also see the return of such classic
attractions as The Peoplemover and the Rocket Jets.
