Submarine Voyage
Glide
into the world of Liquid Space in this extinct Tomorrowland
Attraction. Originally opened the summer of 1959, as part of the
ambitious Tomorrowland refurbishment, (which also included a new
skyway, The Matterhorn and the
Disneyland
Monorail) this attraction took guests to the exciting world of
mermaids, sea serpents and buried treasure, and were among the
sights and sounds that each guest could see and experience through
their own porthole. Guests could travel underneath the North Pole,
visit the graveyard of ships, and see the lost ruins of the City of
Atlantis.
The subs were originally painted gray, but in the 1980's they were
painted a bright explorer yellow. In September of 1998, the
Submarine Voyage
closed, with little warning. The high cost of maintaining the
attraction, and the limited capacity (slow loading) of the subs may
have been the ultimate factor and reason for it's demise.
The
queue area became the Autopia's Winner's Circle shop,
offering Autopia themed merchandise. The new Autopia attraction, and
this shop opened in the summer of 2000.
The Submarine Voyage lagoon has been drained and construction is
underway for an
all-new attraction.
Below are some sound clips from the original attraction.
