Dishing On Disney Hairdos
Wall Street Journal
Two of Walt Disney's recent animated movie hits featured heroines with fabulous hair. Both 2010's Tangled, which offered a twist on the Rapunzel story, and this year's Brave, featuring the red flowing locks of Princess Merida, grossed more than $200 million domestically, according to Box Office Mojo. So when it came to designing the character Periwinkle, Tinker Bell's sister in the coming Secret of the Wings, the studio realized it needed to seriously focus on her hair.
This time it turned to the celebrity hairdresser Ken Paves, whose clients include Eva Longoria, Megan Fox, David and Victoria Beckham, Celine Dion and Jessica Simpson. "But this is probably the greatest thing I've ever done, to give young girls a role model with short hair," Mr. Paves said of Periwinkle's hair, which he described as a "slightly aerodynamic, modern pixie." Peggy Holmes, the film's director, said she hired Mr. Paves because she wanted Periwinkle to be more contemporary and hip.
The film, which had a brief theatrical run in Los Angeles last month, will be released on DVD in late October.
