Disney sets Jesse Wigutow to script ‘Peter And The Starcatchers

    Deadline New York
Disney has hired writer Jesse Wigutow to adapt the best-selling children’s novel, Peter and the Starcatchers, the 2004 book published by Disney’s Hyperion which gives the backstory for the iconic Peter Pan character. (Wigutow’s adaptation of the Robert Ludlum thriller Osterman Weekend is in development at Summit, The Crow at Relativity Media, and a Steve McQueen biopic at Cross Creek.)

Co-authored by Dave Barry and Ridley Pierson, the book has become a hot property, with the current Broadway adaptation having just nabbed nine Tony Award nominations, including Best Play. Peter and the Starcatchers is the first in a series of books by the authors, giving franchise potential to the project.

Disney at work on "Peter and the Starcatchers" film

    Playbill
Disney is at work adapting the novel "Peter and the Starcatchers" for the big screen. The film is a separate entity from the critically praised Broadway production, which dropped the "s" from its title and goes by Peter and the Starcatcher.

Disney will change it again to either Peter or just Starcatcher LOL.

Having big hopes for this one. The first three in the series would make for an amazing, if somewhat melancholy tale. Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson said in an interview they wrote the books as a backstory to Disney's Peter Pan, not J.M. Barrie's, so Disney would be perfect for handling these books!

Not only that, they're published by Hyperion Books, which is a Disney imprint. So it's in-house all the way.

Gary Ross may direct 'Peter and the Starcatchers'

Gary Ross in talks to direct Disney's 'Peter and the Starcatchers'

    Hollywood Reporter
The Hunger Games director Gary Ross is developing Peter and the Starcatchers, Disney’s adaptation of the novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. The 2004 children’s adventure novel was turned into an off-Broadway production that moved to the Main Stem this year and won five Tonys.

The Peter Pan fantasy, a prequel of sorts, follows a young Peter who befriends Molly, a shipmate he meets on the Never Land ship headed toward King Zarboff. Molly tells Peter of a mysterious trunk filled with magical starstuff that must remain out of the hands of the pirate Black Stache (who will lose his hand and become Captain Hook). Peter and Molly lead an effort to recover the trunk, which takes them on a treacherous journey.

I may be willing to see this. Seems like a nice idea as long as it doesn't look like a Disney Channel TV brought to the screen LOL.
