Who or what is "Angry"?

Very cool! I'm excited!
Will this be a prequel, explaining her backstory, or will it be during the Sleeping Beauty story? Or a combination of both, like Wicked?
Tim Burton leaves 'Maleficent'
Tim Burton Won't Direct Disney's 'Maleficent'
The project would have teamed the Alice in Wonderland director with Angelina Jolie
Tim Burton has moved off of Maleficent, the Disney fantasy that would have teamed him with Angelina Jolie.
Disney is not about to put Maleficent into a suspended-animation sleep. The studio is now on the hunt for a new director. One of the names that has surfaced in the early search is David Yates, who helmed the past four Harry Potter movies.
Burton was only loosely attached to the project, and he hasn’t left Disney. He's currently working on the feature-length stop-motion version of his 1984 short Frankenweenie. The movie is due for release on Oct. 5, 2012.

As long as Angelina Jolie is not playing the Mistress of Evil and Tim Burton is not directing her, I'm happy.

Darren Aronofsky director rumors
Angelina Jolie Says 'Maleficent' Has A 'Great Script'
Unsure About Director Rumors
Disney's proposed live-action Maleficent lost its original directorial candidate Tim Burton, due to his committments on Dark Shadows; which, although a bummer, might have opened the door for Black Swan helmer Darren Aronofsky, who is reportedly being courted by Disney to step up to the plate.
When I happened upon still-attached star Angelina Jolie at the premiere of Kung Fu Panda 2 recently, I asked her if she'd heard any news about the project or Aronofsky's involvement. "No, [but] there's a great script," she said of the screenplay penned by Alice In Wonderland and The Lion King scribe Linda Woolverton.
Jolie has told us previously that she loves the character and is very interested in the project. "I would love to [do it]," she said. "It's all new and being discussed, but I loved [Maleficent] when I was a little girl, she was my favorite."

David O. Russell may direct
David O. Russell Circling Disney's 'Maleficent'
David O. Russell has surfaced as one of the directors circling Disney’s fantasy Maleficent. Russell is among those now being considered to helm the pic, but insiders stressed there are other names in the mix as well.
Russell's calendar opened up when he parted ways last month with Columbia Pictures over creative differences, he told THR Monday night at a charity benefit.

Yates, Aronofsky, Russell... Sounds like the competition for director of this thing is becoming a Demolition Derby.

Guillermo del Toro wants to direct ‘Maleficent’
So, Guillermo del Toro, want to direct ‘Maleficent’?
‘I would love to’
Los Angeles Times
When contributor Gina McIntyre spoke to the filmmaker last week, she couldn’t resist asking him about Maleficent. Given Del Toro’s appreciation of classic Disney villains and dragons, maybe he would be interested in the job?
“Let me put it this way, if they ask I’ll take the meeting,” Del Toro said, speaking by phone from Toronto. “I think Maleficent’s dragon is the only design with the wings separate from the front legs, the only time that design has ever worked. And let me tell you how much of a fan I am. I have a collection of over two or three dozen Maleficent figures, some of them four or five feet tall. I own about 10 pieces of conceptual art from Sleeping Beauty that include the dragon and a lot more pieces that are just from Sleeping Beauty. It’s one of my three favorite Disney films. I would love to.
“But I don’t want to put too many hopes on it. They’re probably on a fast track and I cannot take any more projects on a fast track. “
Joe Roth producing Maleficent
Joe Roth taking producer role in Angelina Jolie-starrer ‘Maleficent’ for Disney
Dedline New York
If Joe Roth were any more closely associated with fairy tales, he’d be one of the Grimm Brothers. Roth, who help start Hollywood’s feverish devotion to fairy tale films by producing the $1 billion-grossing Alice in Wonderland, is negotiating to become producer of Maleficent, Disney’s re-telling of its 1959 classic Sleeping Beauty, this time told from the vantage point of the evil witch. It’s no secret that Angelina Jolie wants to play that character. The script was written by Linda Woolverton, who scripted Alice in Wonderland as well as Disney’s recently re-released The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast. They are looking for a director after a preliminary courtship of Alice helmer Tim Burton didn’t work out.
Aside from Alice in Wonderland , Roth is producing Disney’s Sam Raimi-directed Disney pic Oz: The Great and Powerful, as well as the Universal Pictures epic Snow White and the Huntsman.

Robert Stromberg to direct ‘Maleficent’
Disney sets Robert Stromberg to helm ‘Maleficent’
Deadline New York
Disney has tapped Robert Stromberg to make his feature directorial debut on Maleficent, the Linda Woolverton-scripted revisionist take on the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale that is being constructed as a star vehicle for Angelina Jolie to play the villainess. While Stromberg is new to the director’s chair, he is no stranger to dealing with big-ticket spectacle films. He has been production designer on Avatar and Alice In Wonderland, and Disney’s upcoming Oz The Great And Powerful. He also worked on visual effects for such films as 2012, Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World’s End and Master And Commander.
This gives Disney another tentpole feature to complement the Marvel product, with A-list talent. Maleficent stacks up alongside Oz The Great And Powerful, and the Johnny Depp-starrer The Lone Ranger.

Angelina's next role
Disney's 'Maleficent' will be Angelina Jolie's next starring role
The actress has long been keen on playing the role of the sorceress from the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale
Disney's Maleficent will be Angelina Jolie's next movie. Jolie, speaking at a crowded news conference Saturday at the Berlin International Film Festival, where her feature directorial debut In the Land of Blood and Honey is screening out of competition, brought up the project — without directly mentioning a title — when asked about the next step in her career. "I haven't acted in two years, and I haven't done anything else since this [Land of Blood and Honey]. The next thing I am looking at is a Disney movie," said the actress.
Jolie has long been toying with the idea of playing the famous sorceress in the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale. In the December interview with THR, she also revealed her children want her to make the movie and even call her "mom-eficent." She's also eager to make a live-action family film after her experience voicing the Kung Fu Panda franchise. "The best thing to find that balance is to do something that is just for children," Jolie said Saturday. "You know, you find different ways to make things matter. When, for example, you do fun action movies, they are empowering for my daughters."
Maleficent has gained momentum in recent weeks with Robert Stromberg brought on as director. Stromberg was the production designer on Avatar, Alice in Wonderland and Disney's upcoming Oz the Great and Powerful. Jolie told THR in December that she adores screenwriter Linda Woolverton's revisionist take on the fairy tale and the complex relationship between Maleficent and Sleeping Beauty.

Elle Fanning circling to play Aurora
Disney's Maleficent, a live-action origins story starring Angelina Jolie as one of Disney's most iconic villians, is eyeing a June start date in London. Robert Stromberg will direct Maleficent from a script by Linda Woolverton and is already in the U.K. prepping the film. Malificent is a passion project for Jolie and will be her next acting role.
One possibility for the role of Aurora is Elle Fanning, who is in talks to join the cast. Fanning's star status rose last year with Somewhere and J.J. Abrams sci-fi movie Super 8.
