Disney's 'Lone Ranger' reunites 'Pirates' team

    Disney preps 'Lone Ranger' remake

    Hollywood Reporter
Writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio are going from "shiver me timbers!" to "Hi-ho Silver!" The writing duo, best known for their work on the Pirates of the Caribbean films, are in final negotiations to write a live-action big-screen adaptation of The Lone Ranger for Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

Ranger, owned by Classic Media, began life as a 1930s radio show. Its popularity led to movie serials, TV shows, comic strips and comic books, toys, novels and more. Rossio and Elliott, however, do have experience bringing back genres that seemed passe. The CAA-repped duo wrote The Mask of Zorro, the hit adventure movie featuring one of the Ranger's contemporaries, as well as Disney's Pirates franchise, which breathed new life into the old skull and crossbones.

Awesome! With Jerry Bruckheimer behind it, it should be a heck of a lot better than "The Legend of the Lone Ranger" back in the 80's.

It'll be interesting. Isn't Bruckheimer doing a LOT of films recently, it seems?

What I would love to see is them film some of it in the hills between Simi Valley and Chatsworth like the old ones were. Just some bits. Give it a nice tip of the hat to the old.

I've actually been studying up on the Lone Ranger for future bloggin' goodness, and have become quite fond of the character... My favorite version is the really bad 1960's cartoon with all the fantasy and sci-fi elements to it ^_^

I'm holding out hope that this will actually be pretty good, might lead to some reinvigoration of Frontierland, and maybe throw down some sweet Wild Wild West-type mad science ^_^

I am cautiously optimistic that this will turn out good. I hope they do the Lone Ranger justice and keep it in the style of a really good westerns. They don't make too many of those anymore! The last good one I saw was a remake...3:10 to Yuma which was excellent!!

I couldn't agree more. I don't think I could see it if they added any kind of sci-fi elements to it. Just wouldn't be good. Make it a stellar western worthy of an academy award for cinema photography or acting and or set design. We need some truly unique westerns.

disneygirl, right on! 3:10 ROCKS, and even though its rated R, everyone should go see it. It is a gemstone in a dying genre (and westerns, for the most part, are).

    Default Disney's 'Lone Ranger'

Johnny Depp as Tonto, Mad Hatter

Johnny Depp in deep with Disney
Actor to play Tonto, Mad Hatter in upcoming films

    The Hollywood Reporter
Johnny Depp has accepted an invitation to join the manic tea party in Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland", taking on the role of the Mad Hatter. In a surprise piece of casting, Depp also will play the sidekick Tonto in the upcoming movie version of The Lone Ranger.

A daylong preview of upcoming Disney movies and projects, held Wednesday at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland, ended with a surprise appearance by the actor, outfitted as Jack Sparrow, walking onstage to the tune of "The William Tell Overture", the Lone Ranger theme. The Depp castings were just a couple of the developments that Disney execs, led by chairman Dick Cook, offered up to a packed house of exhibitors and media types.

I can see why he would play Tonto. This wouldn't be the first time Depp was to play a sidekick. He was starring as Panza (Don Quixote's sidekick) in "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" by Terry Gilliam. Unfortunately that movie never came to be due to many many many issues LOL.

George and Johnny. Johnny and George. Aww.
I keep wishing it could be that way, because my world would be a Wonderland.
