    Default Addition to WDW 'Pirates'

New addition to Magic Kingdom's Pirates of the Caribbean

Changes are afoot at Pirates of the Caribbean at Magic Kingdom Park

    Disney Parks Blog
Pirates of the Caribbean, the classic Disney attraction which inspired a four-part film franchise, has undergone a few changes in recent years due to the success of these movies. First, Captain Jack Sparrow made his debut at the attraction, then Captain Barbossa appeared aboard a pirate ship. More recently, the ghostly apparitions of knaves Davy Jones and Blackbeard have materialized.

Our friends at Walt Disney Imagineering dropped us a line today to let us know that something from the most recent film, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, is about to be added to the attraction here at Walt Disney World Resort. Updates to the attraction will be made overnight, so Pirates of the Caribbean will remain open to guests during park hours.

How about taking away? Less is more right? Less new POTC and more of the old LOL.

^ Indeed. Get rid of the choppily placed "where's Jack Sparrow?" that gets repeated every two seconds from the speil and throw out the contradictory lines spat out by waterfall Davy Jones (dead men DO tell tales now? I'm guessing this was thought up at three in the morning to meet a deadline)...then we'll talk about adding new things.

    Though I do like mermaids.
I've lost my mind. Isn't that great?

    Default Mermaids added to Pirates

Mermaids added to Pirates of the Caribbean

Mermaids added to Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Magic Kingdom

    Orlando Attractions Magazine
First Capt. Jack Sparrow was added, then Barbosa, Davy Jones and Blackbeard. Now something else from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies have been added to the ride at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. Watch out for evil mermaids as seen in On Strange Tides, after you ride past the ghostly projection on the fog screen at the start of the ride... PHOTO and VIDEO

I'm probably going to get a lot of hate for this, but...

I like it :> And you know why?

Because, guilty confession here, I've always wanted to have some sort of mermaid in the Pirates ride, WDW or DL!

    I think I'll go away now >.>

    So Hakuna Matata, maybe?

You're not alone. I actually am all for this addition. Even though the video is a bit blurry, the projections in the water look pretty good and the mermaid skeleton is just...wow. Very creepy. My only problem with POTC at WDW is how much of a mess it is. For starters, it was built on such a low budget and quick pace that WDW was pretty much ripped off on everything that made the Disneyland original and later the Tokyo and Paris incarnations so special. The grotto scene was too short, neglect in upkeep, cheaper animatronics, and only one drop (honestly, that doesn't really matter to me). When my family and I rode the WDW version back in 2002, we were rather disappointed. It wasn't the Pirates we grew up with obviously, but we honestly did expect it to have more. The only thing I really liked about it was the treasure room at the end with the bound and gagged guards...but that's gone as of 2006.

I'm okay with the movie additions, but there are countless things that I myself would have done differently. I miss Paul Frees all throughout the attraction. I miss the original well dialogue. I miss the ghost monologues where Davy Jones and Blackbeard currently are. I miss the old Blackbeard. I miss the pirates lifting treasure at the end. I miss a lot of the olden days. But it's something we have to learn to live with. I've done so and I still can enjoy the attraction just as I did before. Florida's POTC however is just really crammed and messy. If only they could just tear it down and start over haha. But then we'd get an attraction based solely on the movies and nothing more. o_O
    Pls.
