    Default Brave knockoff

Brave knockoff draws Disney legal challenge

Disney's lawyers skrew up their courage for fight over Brave lookalike flick
Braver, a budget animated flick, has been accused by the entertainment giants of cashing in on their blockbuster hit Brave

    London Daily Record
The DVD cover shows a ginger-haired princess wearing a green dress and standing in an enchanted forest. But this isn’t Disney’s £120million Scottish blockbuster Brave – it’s English-made Braver, churned out for just £64,000. Their Brighton-based firm, Brightspark Production Ltd, released Braver last month and were delighted when Tesco and Sainsbury’s agreed to sell the DVDs for £3. But the 45-minute cartoon fairytale about kidnapped Princess Angela, described as the“bravest princess in all the kingdom”, is at risk of a sad ending.

Makers Jeremy and Jackie Davis are facing legal action over claims they are cashing in on this summer’s Pixar smash. Disney’s lawyers have started an investigation after US studio bosses were alerted to the film. They are angry that the title is so similar to their summer money-spinner and also believe Braver’s artwork may mislead consumers into believing the movie is connected to their own Highland tale about Princess Merida.

A Disney source said: “We’re surprised that supermarkets have agreed to put this film on their shelves because the people behind it haven’t exactly been subtle.

“The title and lettering on the cover are almost identical to Brave and there’s even a red-haired *princess wearing a green dress. The plot is also very similar.”

There is another knockoff as well titled Kiara The Brave. It too features a cover with a young girl in a green dress with red hair. It streams on Netflix and is practically un-watchable. Beyond any infringement, these knockoffs are of such bad quality that the only possible reason they exist is to exploit Disney and confuse consumers.

From where I stand this kind of exploitation happens all the time. I guess it's time to draw a legal line in the sand and limit such dross being sold in the future. When I have seen movies like this for sale in stores, I feel terrible if anyone should be deceived into thinking they are buying something other than what they are actually getting.

A pox upon you, you posers. I hope Disney prevails.

It's like they're almost daring Disney to sue them... Somebody's got to be making money off this somewhere, despite, or maybe even because of the lawsuits.
“There's other ways of learnin' about the behind feet of a mule than gettin' kicked by 'em… And just cause these here tales is about critters like Brer Rabbit and Brer Fox, that don’t mean they ain’t the same like can happen to folks. So them what can’t learn from a tale about critters, just ain’t got their ears tuned for listening…”

Next knockoff's gonna be titled, "Cowardly." They'll probably save it for when Brave gets released on DVD & Blu-Ray!

In fairness, to the thread and subject, don't you think that Brave was just slightly playing off of the Paramount movie title "Braveheart" ? I mean after all, Braveheart takes place in Scotland, and so does Brave.

Brave is a good movie, I think there is a positive message and a moral to the story. But really, how original was it of Pixar to title a movie "Brave", that takes place in Scotland ?

They probably want to let this one go.

This isn't the only Pixar knock off out there.

Shark Bait (wonder where they got that name!) or The Reef rips off Finding Nemo's characters. From what I read, the story is different but still borrows a lot from Nemo.

    Little Cars-Cars.

    An Ant's Life-Bug's Life

    Ratatoing- Ratatouille

I know I have seen more, but I currently can't find them.

It seems that since some companies have not renewed their contracts with Netflix, Netflix has started providing rip-off movies on their streaming.

Tappy Toes clearly a rip-off of Happy Feet.
Chop Kick Panda which is easily supposed to be Kung Fu Panda.

Honestly the list goes on and on. It's just ridiculous that people feel like they can rip off the hard work and countless hours studios put in and pump out som generic look a like for very little money. It's wrong.

    Default Disney sends cease-and-desist letter

    Disney sends cease-and-desist letter

Disney sends warning to makers of 'Braver'
U.K.-based Brightspark also markets direct-to-DVD family titles 'Tangled Up', 'The Frog Princess' and 'Little Cars'.

    Hollywood Reporter
Disney has sent a strong warning to Brightspark Production Ltd., a British company marketing a number of direct-to-DVD titles that bear an uncanny resemblance — in packaging at least — to Disney releases. For instance, their latest title is Braver — a 45-minute animated fairytale that features a redheaded princess in a green dress on its cover, just as this summer's Brave did on its poster. To add to the confusion, Braver uses a Celtic-inspired title font almost identical to the one used in Brave's marketing. And there are others: Tangled Up, highly reminiscent of Tangled; The Frog Princess, not to be confused with The Princess and the Frog; and Little Cars — which isn't Cars

Disney has sent Brightspark a cease-and-desist letter demanding they withdraw the DVDs from the market, or else face litigation. Disney said in a statement: "People place great trust in the quality and creativity of Disney, and when it appears that another company is causing confusion among Disney consumers we will act to protect ourselves and the consumer. Disney believes Brightspark has demonstrated a pattern of misleading consumers with numerous releases that confuse and undermine the trust those consumers have in Disney."

Brightspark has replied in a statement that they are in discussions with Disney to find a "mutually acceptable" resolution, The Guardian reports. "All we've tried to do is give parents something their children will hopefully find entertaining," the company says. "We came up with our title around 18 months ago and if we thought consumers would mistake our film for Brave, we would have renamed it."
