    Default Disney at the Oscars

No Animated Feature nomination for Disney●Pixar

Kung Fu Panda 2, Rango earn Oscar 2012 animated nods
    Pixar, Disney shut out

    Pittsburgh Movie Examiner
The Animated Feature category offered some of the few surprises in 2012 Oscar nominations, which were announced in Los Angeles on Jan. 24. Why? Not necessarily for the quality of the five films that made the short list for best animated movie – which included the expected Rango and Kung Fu Panda 2 – but because of who didn’t make the list.

Neither Pixar nor Disney were nominated for an Academy Award in the full-length category. It was the first time since 1995’s Toy Story that Pixar did not receive event an Oscar nomination for feature-length animation in a year in which the studio was eligible.

Oscar nomination for Pixar short 'La Luna'

'La Luna' Nominated at the 84th Academy Awards!

    Upcoming Pixar
Nominations for the 84th Academy Awards were announced today with an honorable mention reserved for one of Pixar’s films. Disappointingly but unsurprisingly, Cars 2 didn’t garner any nods this year making it the first Pixar film not to land a spot in the Best Animated Feature category since its inception. On a positive note, Enrico Casarosa’s short, La Luna, is now in the running for Best Animated Short!

La Luna opens in theatres with Brave on June 22, 2012!

    Default 13 Oscar nominations

    13 Oscar nominations for Disney

Disney pulls in 13 Oscar Nods

    The Disney Blog
The Walt Disney Studios performed respectably today when tallying up the Oscar Nominations decided by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Thirteen nominations for films ranging from The Help and War Horse (both Dreamworks films distributed by Disney) to The Muppets and the short film La Luna were announced.

    The Help
    Best Picture
    Leading Actress (Viola Davis)
    Supporting Actress (Octavia Spencer)
    Supporting Actress (Jessica Chastain)

    War Horse
    Best Picture
    Cinematography (Janusz Kaminski)
Art Direction (Rick Carter-prod. Design, Lee Sandales-set decoration)
    Music-Original Score (John Williams)
Sound Editing-Richard Hymns and Gary Rydstrom
Sound Mixing-Gary Rydstrom, Andy Nelson, Tom Johnson, Stuart Wilson

    The Muppets
Music-Original Song “Man or Muppet” – Bret McKenzie

    Real Steel
Visual Effects-Erik Nash, John Rosengrant, Dan Taylor, Swen Gilberg

    La Luna
    Best Animated Short Film

Under Bob Iger, the Walt Disney Studios made a conscious decision to move away from producing the types of films that typically garner you huge numbers of Oscar nods. And Disney is fine with that. They’d rather count the box office receipts, which were pretty good this year.

Thankfully, Disney stands to make a little money from the Oscars anyway. ABC is hosting the telecast on Sunday, February 26, 2012.

I hate to say it as an avid Pixar supporter, but this doesn't really surprise me. Although I have yet to see virtually any of the nominations for Best Animated Feature, Cars 2 didn't strike me as Oscar material. Now, next year, Brave will be an entirely different story.

Surprised they went with "Man or Muppet." I was expecting "Pictures In My Head" or "Life's a Happy Song," especially "Life's a Happy Song."

@ lpetiti Agreed. Cars 2 was good, not great. However, I think the main problem with Cars 2 was, as Faux Newz put it, "upsetting Republicans" due the whole "big oil vs. environmentalism" subplot that it had going on. But, Brave, for sure will take home an Oscar or five.

    ^Over 9000!

Kidding. Nothing real surprising in the result. I haven't seen La Luna yet, but I'm betting it's worth the nomination. The Help though? I wouldn't really say "best" picture. Like Cars 2: Good, but not great.

^Most definitely! And don't get me wrong, it was a good movie. Just "best" isn't the word I'd use, but that's what opinions are for.

Default Best Picture for ‘The Help’?

The Help’ vs ‘Artist’ for Best Picture

SAG, DGA results split between ‘Artist’ and ‘The Help
    Adding intrigue to Oscar race

    Deadline Hollywood
The Help’s Viola Davis certainly got a leg up in her fierce Best Actress race against The Weinstein Company’s duo Meryl Streep and Michelle Williams, and Help’s Octavia Spencer continued on her supporting actress roll that started in earnest with the Critics Choice and Golden Globe awards. But the Outstanding Cast award that also went to The Help let that Dreamworks film rack up one of the biggest single film hauls in the Screen Actors Guild Awards’ 18-year history. Only two other films, American Beauty in 1999 and Chicago in 2002, match Help’s three wins out of five film categories. Interestingly, both went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture. A good omen? continue

Default Kermit and Piggy present Oscars

Kermit and Miss Piggy to present Oscars

The Muppets make it to the Oscars

    The Wrap
The Muppets may not be singing on the Oscar show, but they will be in the house. Although the Oscar producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer have decided not to include onstage performances of the two nominated songs, including "Man or Muppet," they have booked the Muppets to be presenters on the show, ABC and the Academy announced on Friday.

According to the press release, the Muppets power couple of Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy will be handling the Oscar presenting chores. Brad and Angelina will now have some stiff red-carpet competition in the form of a frog and a pig.

'Man or Muppet' wins for original song

Academy Awards 2012: 'Man or Muppet' wins for original song

    Los Angeles Times
Man or Muppet”, penned by Bret McKenzie, took the Oscar for original song. The winning song, from Walt Disney Pictures’ The Muppets, the first film featuring the iconic Jim Henson characters in more than a decade, was sung largely by Jason Segel and Peter Linz, who voiced the Muppet Walter.

Man or Muppet” was one of three songs from The Muppets that were on the original shortlist for Oscar song contention. The song is one of the more sincere pieces of music in The Muppets, with Walter and Segel’s Gary caught in an identity crisis. Songwriter McKenzie is best-known for his work on Flight of the Conchords.

Sincere pieces. Sincere pieces. SINCERE PIECES. LOL It has Jason Segel questioning if he's a puppet.

LOL snarkiness aside, I'm glad it won. I was a little sad they didn't choose "Life's a Happy Song", but congrats to the entire Muppets team!

Conrats to The Muppets team! The song was great, even though the Rio song was good too. Glad that one won though! :]
