Disney Plans Tron: Uprising Animated Show

    Wired
Disney XD plans to bring an animated series called Tron: Uprising to the cable channel in summer 2012, according to Variety.

Tron: Uprising’s voice cast will include Lord of the Rings star Elijah Wood, Emmanuelle Chriqui (who plays Sloan on Entourage), Mandy Moore, Paul Reubens (aka Pee-wee Herman) and Lance Henriksen, the publication reported, with Bruce Boxleitner reprising his role as Tron.

The show will spin out of Tron: Legacy, the highly anticipated sequel to 1982 sci-fi movie Tron. Gary Marsh, president of Disney Channels Worldwide, called the animated series “a culmination of an extraordinary collaboration between Disney Television Animation and our feature film studio.”

I had no way to know an animated series based on TRON would be debuing upon the conclusion of the TRON LEGACY film. I predict or guarantee it will continue the storyline where both movies ended of what it's like inside the world of cyberspace the computer that is.

According to Disney Geek, it's actually going to be a set in between the two.

    Default TRON: Uprising at Comic-Con

    TRON: Uprising at Comic-Con

Disney XD to feature sneak peek of TRON: Uprising At Comic-Con

    Comic Book Resources
While Disney’s movie division is skipping the San Diego Convention Center’s cavernous Hall H this year, the entertainment giant’s television units will plant their flags at Comic-Con International, where Disney XD will offer a sneak peek at the animated TRON: Uprising. However, the preview of the 10-episode series, which bridges the gap between 1982′s TRON and last year’s TRON: Legacy, won’t be a free-standing panel. Instead, it will be screened, along with teasers for Motor City and Gravity Falls, as part of the Friday, July 23, presentation for Phineas and Ferb.

Debuting in summer 2012, TRON: Uprising features the voices of Elijah Wood as Beck, Emmanuelle Chriqui as Paige, Mandy Moore as Mara, Paul Reubens as Pavel, Reginald VelJohnson as Able, Lance Henriksen as Tesler and Bruce Boxleitner reprising his role as Tron. Produced by Disney Television Animation, the series follows Beck, a young program who becomes the unlikely leader of a revolution inside the computer world of The Grid. His mission is to free his home and friends from the reign of the villainous Clu and his henchman General Tesler. Beck will be trained by Tron – the greatest warrior the Grid has ever known. Tron will not only teach Beck the fighting skills he needs to challenge this brutal military occupation, but will be a guide and mentor to him as he grows beyond his youthful, impulsive nature into a courageous, powerful leader. Destined to become the new protector of the system, Beck adopts Tron’s persona and becomes the archenemy of Tesler and his oppressive forces.

I am pretty sure I know the face Neo will make when we sees this. Close to that with a high pitch squealing noise, lol.

Yes! Anything with Bruce Boxleitner, I am watching! I know it's just his voice, but I love his voice (and him) =)

Default Early look at ‘Tron: Uprising’

An early look at ‘Tron: Uprising

Tron: Uprising’: An early look at Disney’s return to the Grid

    Los Angeles Times
Tron: Uprising, which begins this summer on Disney XD, was developed by Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, the same tandem that wrote Tron: Legacy, and they say the freedom of animation is allowing to explore the Grid without the constraints of a special effects budget.

“The fun thing about animation is all the stuff we couldn’t afford in [‘Tron: Legacy’], either because they were financially or technologically prohibitive, we can now do because it’s animated,” Kitsis said.

The duo, now also working on its freshman ABC show Once Upon a Time, has picked up the Grid’s story right after Clu takes over, which happened years before the events of Legacy. The new show isn’t about users — those are humans who go into Grid, such as Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) or Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund) in the films — but focuses instead on programs, the citizens of the Grid. The main character is Beck (voiced by Elijah Wood), the unlikely leader of a revolution against Clu.

As Kitsis puts it: “What happens when you find yourself occupied by a force that is not in your best interest – how do you fight back?”

Mandy Moore and Bruce Boxleitner (reprising his title role from the two movies) join Wood in the cast, while Charlie Bean (Ren & Stimpy, Samurai Jack) is the show’s director-showrunner. Tron: Uprising also features the music of Daft Punk.

I'm pretty saddened by the animation. I know the Grid is supposed to be this out-of-the-world experience, but the characters look so weird. The VOs and story line might help, but I know it won't stop me from flipping through channels to watch it. In the movies, being live action, everyone looked like actual humans- or rather, human shaped figures. But when a character has legs the length of your front door and a torso and pelvis who's combined length are no longer than a shoe, it really doesn't sit well. Maybe that's just me, but I had hoped for something along the lines of Hanna-Barbera. You didn't see a lot of odd shaped humans in those...

O.K. Well at least all the proportions were right!

Like I said, the voice talent and story line might make it for me, but the animation doesn't help.

    Default Full Pilot Episode Online

Disney XD has posted the full-length pilot episode on YouTube. You can watch it here:

    Beck's Beginning - TRON: Uprising

It's 32 minutes in HD. I didn't want to embed a video that long.

    Default Brand Building

This is a brilliant piece of brand building. TRON Legacy underperformed, somewhat. Fans of the original TRON were happy to see it, but young people were unfamilliar with it. This pilot episode looks pretty good, and I think if the show catches on, it could drive DVD sales of the movies, and build a fanbase for the next feature film.

Alright, thank you, Ez. I saw about ten minutes of it, then I had to do some other things. Definitely looks like it will catch on. Seems like Disney's answer to more boy-ish shows on rival channels. I think Disney programming is slowly getting there to appeal to everyone and not just little girls with the desire to be a pop star.

    Default Full Episodes online

The next episodes (The Renegade Pts. 1 & 2) are now online here:

Videos | TRON | Disney XD

The caveat: Disney's video player can be a bit wonky. It took several tries to get the episodes to play. I kept getting We're Sorry, this video is only available in certain countries. (Where do they think I am?) Finally I tried one of the shorter commercial promos first, which worked, and then went back to the full episodes and they played. Maybe it was just a coincidence. I dunno....
