A new Muppet movie planned
Segel and Stoller take on Muppets
'Marshall' duo to write, direct film for Disney
Variety
Disney has enlisted scribe-thesp Jason Segel and helmer Nick Stoller to create the next Muppet movie for the studio.
Segel and Stoller will write the script and Stoller will direct. Segel, who graduated from Apatow-produced skeins "Freaks and Geeks" and "Undeclared" got his first sole writing credit on the Apatow-produced "Forgetting Sarah Marshall." Universal releases the pic, which Stoller directed, on April 18.
In "Sarah Marshall" Segel's character writes a "Dracula" musical performed by puppets. Those cloth creatures were custom-made by the Henson puppeteers, and the experience emboldened Segel to pitch his concept for a Muppets movie when he was invited in for a general meeting with exec Kristin Burr. Segel got a deal in the room and enlisted Stoller to co-write and direct the project.
Segel and Stoller just made another U deal to co-write the comedy "Five-Year Engagement," with Stoller helming and Segal starring. Segel, from the CBS laffer "How I Met Your Mother," next stars in "I Love You, Man" at DreamWorks.

A Different Kind Of Company
A Different Kind Of Executioner
Jim Henson's company relilnquished the rights to it's characters:
Sesame Street's characters were donated to The Children's Television Workshop.
The Muppet Show's characters were sold to Disney.
All other Creature Shop characters (Dark Crystal, Fraggle Rock, Labyrinth, etc.) are still owned by Hensen's heirs.
MSN movies has a little more detail about the new movie here.
It should be interesting to see this. I still remeber watching The Muppet Show on Sunday nights and watching Muppet Treasure Island as much as humanly possible.

Well I would hope at least that they use the voices of past to replay their roles of the Muppets. Except of course Jim who is no longer with us but his son did take over that. I wonder how the Henson Company feels about all of this and if they were happy to get rid of the characters.
I must say that I like this guy's enthusiasm about the project and what he wants to do which I think is great.
Thanks for the extra info Ezra.

Actually, Jim Henson began negotiations with Disney himself in 1989. He thought that Disney could run the buisiness end, leaving him free to focus on the creative end. But his sudden illness put the deal on hold.
In a way that's a good thing. The original deal was for the entire Jim Henson Company, but the deal with Henson's heirs is only for the Muppet Show characters. The Henson family still holds the Creature Shop.

Jason Segel says it's going global
Empire
The Muppets are coming back (yay!), this we know. This past weekend, we caught up with Jason Segel, who'll be co-writing the new movie, about what to expect from the glorious return. CHUD revealed earlier this week that the movie will concern the felt-based gang trying to save The Muppet Show from evil types who wish to bring about it's end, but Segel also had a few more details to share.
"It's a classic story," he says. "It's the Muppets needing to get back together to save the show...It's going to take place all over the world. Basically, the Muppets are no longer together. So that might take a while to film. I guess they've set the precedent in that last movie (Muppets From Space) that Gonzo is, in fact, an alien, so he could well end up in space. That guy's all over the place!"

What is this B.O. present boomtime?
B.O. present is Variety slang for the film's premier. B.O. boomtime is a peak season for movie attendence. In this case, it's Christmas. B.O. means box office.
So the new Muppet movie is scheduled to open Christmas day, 2011 to take advantage of the potentially large audiences during that season.
Variety is a newspaper that has been around for years which reports on the movie and television industries. Over the years they developed their own special show business slang. The publish a "slanguage" translation page on their website.
