^ My sentiments exactly. In my opinion, they should have never called it Disney's MGM Studios, or even MGM Studios. Why? You just pointed out the primary reason, and that is people will be led to believe that it is an MGM park rather than a Disney park. Why the company went with that decision is beyond me. Disney took MGM properties and leased them to use in their theme park. This isn't a new practice. Six Flags leased Warner Brothers and DC properties to use in their theme parks. Universal Studios leased Marvel characters in their and Knott's Berry Farm leased the Peanuts Gang. It's a very simple formula, and that formula is that you never put the name of the company you are leasing characters from unless the entire park is themed to that specific group of characters. See what I mean?

Well, as I understand it, in order for the contract to never expire as was Disney's desire, the only way MGM would agree to that was to have the MGM in the name of the park.
Unfortunately, years later, MGM fell on hard times that it didn't expect to have. These days, that contract was simply obsolete. I think it was a good move to have MGM in the name, as without the contract, we would have never seen a ride like The Great Movie Ride, and it was a good move to kick MGM out of the name. People are still saying MGM because that's been in the name for 20 some odd years now. Old habits die hard, but it's only a matter of time. Eventually the acronym will be used less & less until it's not used at all.

Yet why does everyone still insist on calling the park "MGM"?

Funny, I broke that habit easily... because I've never been one to call it that in the first place. But I digress.

Having just spent a week there, it was pretty apparent that the park, and its guests, have pretty much moved on with the new Hollywood Studios name. It has a nice flow, and people are getting used to hearing & saying it. I did not hear one person utter the MGM acronym in the many hours I spent there.

Yea I'm always correcting people that it's "Hollywood Studios" and they act like I'm crazy, but it's ok...like PeopleMoverMatt said people elsewhere have seemed to move on, but I guess living nowhere near DHS people are a little less likely to accept it...?

More like intarwebz l33tspeak/lolspeak message board bloggers can't be bothered to type out Hollywood Studios with MGM being a convenient/quick alternative.

The first time I did Traditions as a CM (May 2002), we were specifically told not to call it MGM, but that if you wanted to use a nickname for it, to call it "the Studios." They wanted to get people to avoid highlighting the MGM.

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only here who refers to it as "the Studios".

When I worked there it was still MGM but I think we all referred to it as the studios as well, though PMM was right we did shorthand it to MGM when group of us CMs were going to meet there and hang out. Its hard to switch your train of thought when its been referred to it for such a long time. Despite the name change I love the park and the feeling it gives. I think it still maintains the feeling of the Golden Age of Hollywood as well as catering to younger park guests. I mean face it, unfortunately most 12 year old kids aren't going to care about the environment, they are going for the rides, (unless these kids are mini-vfers and dedicated Disney fans), so the park has to allow for a little wiggle room. I wish that it was themed more Hollywood than it is though, just cause I love that era.
