Default Kilimanjaro Safaris

I've never been to AK so I was wondering how close do the safari vehicles get to the animals? Since animals can be unpredictable, are you still able to view the animals even if they are sleeping or staying cool under a tree/bush? Thanks!

that was a great ride! it really depends on the animals. there were a couple we got close to. you might ot see all of them, but for the most part, it is wide open, so you can see most of the animals. usually the cats are sleeping under trees, and it is hard to spot them, but the guide will stop the ar and point out to where they are. go during the morning, the animals are usually out more at that time, and the lines are shorter. i didnt think i was going to have much fun on it, but it was one of my favorites. there are a few "surprises" during the ride too

It really depends on when you go. Sometimes the animals will be within feet of the truck, and sometimes they won't. It depends which animals they are, too. Not all of the animals are able to get right up to the ride path - the ones that pose a bigger danger to it are kept separate (the obvious ones - hippos, elephants, cheetahs, lions, etc). Generally, there's enough animals out there that you'll see plenty. The ones that tend to be harder to spot include animals like the lions and especially the cheetahs. Imagineers and animal care staff do find ways to tempt the animals out. For instance, the rocks in the lion exhibit are actually made to stay cool, so that the lions will lay on them in the heat of the day where guests can see them. And zookeepers use more traditional methods called "environmental enrichment" to tempt the animals out of hiding. This could includes snacks, toys ("Enrivonmental Enrichment Devices" or EEDs), anything like that.

If you want to see the animals when they're most active, though, I highly suggest going on it as early as possible. That's a general rule for any zoological facility - you tend to see the animals most active around dawn and dusk.

I shall take this opportunity to share some animal pictures from when I rode the Safaris:

We actually had to wait for these guys to finish crossing the road...

Same with the deer (total Bambi flashbacks here)

Pretty good idea of how close the animals get to road at times!

How do you know zebras are old? They're still in black & white!!

And last but not least...where's the road?

I was very fortunate to have the front row, I just wish I was as experienced with the camera then as I am now. Oh well, gives you an idea at least.

I remember hearing that some of the poaching elements of the ride were toned down for the younger kids.

The animals are right there along side the vehicles most of the time. There's points where they even cross the road and sometimes they stay there. It's so fun.

That is true about the morning and night experiences.

Great attraction!!

A couple of giraffe got in the way when I last rode it last year. Then of course the lions were as close as they could get in their enclosure to the car doing what else? sleeping.

Yea lions don't get up close to you. They have a really big ditch but all it looks like is a rock thats like three feet tall. But the other animals pretty much are right there. Great ride

The safari is always one of the must do things for me every time I go. The story is cute and the animals always make this trip different everytime I go. One trip you might see giraffe next time elephants. When you combine this with the Silverback gorillas on the Pangani Trails and the Tigers and Hippos this is one great trip!!

I had a rhino run along side our car when we went on the ride...

all I can say, though, is FAST PASS!
