^"The Epcot Theme Park icon, Spaceship Earth, looking like a giant golf ball rising high above the horizon..." -From WDW website... They refer to Spaceship Earth in such a way to let newcomers know that this giant... Well... Golfball actually has a purpose/meaning.

I thought I heard somewhere that it kind of annoyed the Imagineers that worked on it that it was referrred to as a golf ball...

You can take comfort in the fact that Spaceship Earth is a geodesic sphere while a golf ball is not. I think referring to it as a giant golf ball is only an attempt at being cute. I'm sure a lot of tourists mention that SE looks like a golf ball.

Lots of engineers give nicknames to their creations. So it wouldn't surprise me if some Imagineers called it a golf ball too from time to time.

I absolutely can't stand it when Spaceship Earth is referred to as "the big golf ball." Really, it makes me want to punch someone in the face. Seriously, it's not a golf ball, and it has a name, thank you very much.

Am I the only one not upset by this? Yeah, it would be nice if people could remember the name, but sometimes you just need to describe what it looks like for people to remember what you are talking about.

To me I really don't think it looks more like a golf ball than a volleyball, but I can understand the confusion. A lot of people that I have heard refer to it as a golf ball have no idea there is something inside, they just think it is an icon. To me it is sorta like calling the GRR mountain a wolf. I can completly see how people would think it was a wolf, even though I know it isn't. Or like people calling Sleeping Beauty's Castle, Snow White's or Cinderellla's. Yeah, they are wrong but it is an innocent mistake.

Well no. But that innocent mistake turns into how people know it. So instead of trying to make peope think it is something else, they play into the "it looks like a golf ball". If you have ever been to Epcot, even if you forgot most rides/shows, you will remember that giant white ball shaped thing walking in. And instead of using a horrible amount of clumsy adjectives (like in my previous sentence) they call it a golf ball.

Well, really, what does this look like to you?

Looks like we got a bad lie here. Might need the wedge.

But seriously, it's just meant as a running joke. People pretty much know that Spaceship Earth is an attraction. Those who don't know are informed pretty quickly. The golf ball thing is just a joke though. Have some fun with it.

It does look like a golf ball. Tourists probably call it that so everyone knows what they're talking about, because maybe not everyone visiting Epcot knows what Spaceship Earth is.

To me it is sorta like calling the GRR mountain a wolf.

That's exactly what it looks like, though. The DCA designers really dropped the ball on that one. I've lived a few miles from Disneyland my entire life, and every time I go there I can never see anything but a wolf.

And as for the topic at hand, I don't think anybody really thinks it's a golf ball; it's just a term of endearment.
