More is becoming known about the exact plans for a refurb for Space Mountain there as time progresses. If current information is true, it could go down as early as February.

We have a date: April 19, 2009

We have a length of time: 10 months or so

The nature of the refurb is still up in the air. Track work is going to happen, but the exact nature of which is not certain. Will it be replaced? Will it just have a lot of work? Will they add a loop, a launch & a stand-up suspended wooden rapids ride? Stay tuned.

Why could they not close it in, say, September and work on it during the slow months and open in time for summer 2010?

While I"m a bit bummed about not having Space open to my first (and only, at least for a while) trip to WDW, but I may risk having my peoplemover down too, which I'm worried about even more. I hope they post specific dates, and soon, that both will be closed for.

When they have space closed the people mover status will be up in there air. They will try to keep it open as long as they can but they might have to close it at some point...If they do though, they are going to have to work on the ride itself because they dont have any handicapp accessible ways of getting on the ride. And the only reason they dont have to put one on now is because they are still open.

If they must close the TTA, I just hope they have the dates set in advance and announce it accordingly. To just do it at random would suck for me.

Though I really want to see WDW eventually, I'm wondering if I should postpone this trip to another time, even though it will cost me much more later (I'm doing the buy 4 get 3 free deal now). Going on the PM was to be a big highlight.

Default WDW Space Mountain refurb April 19

Walt Disney World's Space Mountain refurbishment begins April 19

Walt Disney World's Space Mountain closing for 'refreshment' on April 19

Orlando Sentinel
Disney said Wednesday it will shut down Space Mountain this spring for what the company described as a months-long "refreshment" of the 34-year-old Magic Kingdom roller coaster. The ride will close April 19, just after the Easter holiday. It is expected to reopen late in the year, Disney spokeswoman Andrea Finger said, though a specific reopening date has not been set.

The construction work will include installing new track inside the enclosed coaster, which carries guests in the dark through a series of sudden drops and sharp turns. The layout of the track will remain the same, however. Other upgrades will include a new enclosure for the ride's queuing area and a new ceiling inside its signature, white dome, Finger said.

4/19? Ha! My b-day's 4/8! Maybe I can drag my twin there, she loves SM just the way it is, so I figure she ought to get one last ride b/c she didn't go on it when we were there at Thanksgiving.

So,other than replacement of aging track, and perhaps some cosmetic enhancement to its queue area, whatever changes will be minimal?

Good!

Space Mountain doesn't need to be changed;any sort of enhancement involving animatronics or some attempt at a "story" would only hurt a classic ride.

However, one part of Space Mountain that does need attention---in fact,it's needed it for years!---is the exit tunnel.
Ever since RCA's Home Of Future Living moved out of there years ago, they haven't come up with anything near as good!Planet RYCA{or whatever they called it}?A BIG SNOOZE!!!!That "FedEx Of The Future" or whatever the HECK it was supposed to be?!?YAWN!!!!
Come ON,Imagineers---you can do better than THAT!
Why not take a cue from the defunct Horizons and---in keeping with the retro-future theme of current Tomorrowland---create displays of past predictions of "the home of tomorrow".In fact,I'd love to see Horizon's 1930's art-deco apartment brought back, albeit in revised form!
