I have a sony HVR-V1U. I will be taking it into the parks for the first time this next week...hopefully everything will turn out well.

Have any of you ever been asked by a cast member to not use your cameras, especially the larger ones?

i would get security asking who i shoot for when i took my XL1 with me. i tell them for me. one started to tell me how frys and stores like that sell professional camera and i started to debate that with him. pro-sumer and pro are totally diff. when passing the check points they may notify security you have a big camera and will try to tell you some times you need some one to escort you in the park. depends on their moods. i stopped bringing in the XL1 plus it stinks in low light. got a dcr-hc96 and a hv30 and next i am getting the fx1000 with it's 1.5 lux rating there are other reasons for purchasing it

I also have a Canon HV30.

In the parks, I alternated my usage between video and photos and was pretty happy with both. In low light you have to fiddle a bit with the settings so that it doesn't go too grainy -if I was more disciplined about filming the darkrides, I would 'pre-ride' to find the right settings- but the picture quality in the non-darkride world is great! The fireworks and night modes were interesting, but I didn't really find them useful for handheld work (night mode without a tripod gives you a that 'what a drunk person sees' effect). I'm not thrilled with the onboard mic, but there isn't a lot of that recording 'whine' noise I've heard on other cameras.

I picked this camera based on the reviews, usage by other park-goers, and my need to have a lot of recording time available. I'm not going to leave the park to offload data from the onboard flash memory/hard drive to free up recording space and I'm not going to carry a laptop around with me to do the same. It's a lot easier to carry around and pop in another tape (or battery). I only needed 6 tapes for my last trip with 5 hours devoted to recording around the park. From the start, I've only used Sony's 'wet' HDV tapes and haven't seen any skipping errors in transfer.

I use Sony Vegas Premiere Pro to edit HD and have been very pleased with that as well (especially for the price). HD rendering takes my computer about 2 hours for something like the tiki room and preshow. I watch it on a PS3 by either sneaker-netting it with a flash drive or watching it over the home network using Nero.

So far, Disneyland heaven for me.

The HV30 is minidv not flash memory and thats why i like. i am not sold on avchd due to it does not pump as much info as minidv. i use the sony dvm63 hd tapes as well. as for the mic on the camera i use a DV-50 that goes right on the shoe. big different in sound. that is the one thing about this camera in low light. it does retain vivd color that did impress me. the firework mode i use with a tripod i use premier pro CS4 since i have the master collection. now the only draw back is scene detection so i found a free program called HDVsplit

Yeah, I also like keeping the tape as a backup. It takes a few DVDs to back up the 12Gb from each tape.

If the sound's that much better, I'll have to try out that DV-50. Does it affect battery life much?

I loved using HDVsplit. Small install, very straightforward, good scene detection, no manually chopping up files - great stuff!

NO "professional level" cameras / camera equipment allowed into the parks!

Don't know if you guys read this thread.
