Walt Disney World upgrades Fort Wilderness

Disney upgrades Fort Wilderness Campground

Orlando Sentinel
Disney is quietly undertaking its broadest campground-improvements program in two decades, adding extra-extra-large camper pads for recreational vehicles, cable-TV and Internet service throughout, Segway scooter tours, a mini-water park, a dog park, and an improved electric-cart rental operation. The program also is taking aim at invasive plant species such as potato vines, replacing such vegetation with fresh native plantings.

"The fort is a treasure at Walt Disney World. There really is so much history with the success of Walt Disney World that stems back to Fort Wilderness," said Jean Gallagher, general manager of both Disney's Wilderness Lodge and Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort Campground. "And because of the nature of this property, and the theming, we really haven't done a lot of changes. ... We have not made a lot of investment from a site perspective in the 37 years we've been open. So this opportunity to meet what our guests are asking for, and how the industry has changed, this is more than we could expect."

Wasn't there an RV park/campground by Disneyland? I thought there was one.

I'm not surprised by this. After all, WDW seems to be the favorite. Why can't they add something new to Disneyland's Fort Wilderness? Instead this time hold the pirates. Tom Sawyer Island has been ruined as a result of those bratty pirate-loving kids and their families. I'm sure Walt wouldn't have wanted to combine Pirates of the Caribbean with Tom Sawyer Island. They're in two seperate lands!

Among the ideas originally thrown around for what became Tom Sawyer's Island, there was Treasure Island and the Mickey Mouse Club Island. Tom Sawyer eventually, and in my opinion rightly, won out. Unfortunately, those original questions over what the island would be called provide a public relations rationalization for the Pirate's Lair.

It would have been nice to have them restore the original Fort Wilderness or at least build a new version that actually looks like the original, and develop out a Frontierland theme or even a Davy Crockett and the River Pirates thing. But it's in the past now, and this article is talking about the campground at WDW.
