This sequel could be good, if handled properly.

The reason why he continues to make these types of movies is because it gives the actors more to do then just provide their voice. It really allows them to enter these fictional worlds in a more hands on way. This is just another form of animation and I think even Walt Disney would really enjoy this approach, its different. These movies still have animators but whose job is to clean up and make these motion caps more fluid and natural. The movement is still ackward but I think that these artist are doing their best with the time and budget that was given to them. Their craft will get better as time goes by.

I think you are right about that. I was thinking about this today and it occurred to me that Zemeckis may see himself as a pioneer who is helping advance this particular style of film making. Motion-capture may evolve into something much better than it is now due to what is being learned by making these films.

The Silly Symphonies of the early 1930s were primitive compared to the animation in Snow White, but Snow White wouldn't have been possible without the knowledge acquired by making those early shorts. Motion-capture is undergoing the same evolution. Who knows what may be possible in 5-10 years due to the work being done now.

But I still am not yet a fan of motion-capture. Maybe I will be in the future.

I am thrilled to hear that they are finally going back in and adding a second movie. hopefully like toystory 2 it will be a totally different adventure but with all of our old friends. if motion capture is used for the real life items that would be great but im really against anything else.

Also the new movie could find itself loaning new aspects to Walt Disney Plaza at DCA once it is finished, or a possible refurbishment of Roger Rabit, still maintaining the RR1 story line, but just updated to create more enthusiasm for the project. Looks like we'll all just have to wait and see...

ok, reading through the WHOLE article (not just the snippet here on VF) and it says the cartoon characters ARE DEFINITELY staying 2D. But unfortunately, it said "everything else" so I'm not sure if that means live action actors or Toon Town, so...

Not sure how I feel about this. If done right, it could be a very enjoyable movie. Otherwise it may just end up being another stupid sequel. Oh well, we'll see how this plays out.

With Motion Capture, the facial expressions look amazing. It's the other movements that look like there is no weight to them (example, Scrooge during "light as a feather, merry as a schoolboy", the jump looks too light). Anyway, I want to go see it, because I love the story. What really makes me mad is when people make a big deal about it being "too scary"! It's a Christmas Carol for pete's sake! Just because Kermit and Mickey have done versions of it doesn't mean that it is a happy story. It is a story of the redemption of a man's soul, which will be a bit scary for some, but that doesn't make it a horror movie.

I'm excited to hear this. I like motion capture, but to me it seems like it would be easier to shoot the film in the same way the first one was shot, using real actors and CG characters done in a 2D style. It seems like the motion capture would take more time, money, and effort, and there's no real reason that it needs to be used.

Besides, motion capture won't look good on cartoon characters when they do their crazy cartoon antics like their eyes are popping out of their eyes and such. I'm not sure how it would look on Toontown itself, but I'm glad that the cartoons are staying 2-D. I'm just hoping the actors will stay real life.

Sincerely, a brother of a half-demon,

If there's something that comes into the story like a half human half toon, I'd like to see motion capture on stuff like that with the facial expressions. I'll be able to survive if the live actors' hands had to interact with a toon and replacing the hand with a CGI hand (they did this in Narnia), but if they totally replace live actors with mocap throughout the film, I will throw a hissy fit. And I won't mind if the actor is CGI for a second either, i mean they did it in POTC3 when Jack and Davy Jones duke it out on the mast thing.
