I think he would be hilarious in the film. And he would play a great pirate.

Couldn't find anything on the forums about this, but apparently today at D23, Johnny Depp made an appearance and they announced plans for PotC4. Was anybody at this event today?

Anyway, it's called Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Here's one of the many articles about it:

Don't know how I feel about this yet. I've yet to see a fourth movie of an unplanned series be any good, but I'm hoping this will be fun!

Interesting. However what caught my eye was the newly released leaked New Moon trailer that was an associated story

However I don't like the idea of a 4th pirates. It doesn't make sense really to have it be a 4th sequel and a new trilogy (Star Wars anyone?) but I'll reserve judgement until I at the very least see a trailer. It may be able to redeem itself by having the same actors play the same characters so we'll see...

I'll watch it! as long as Depp is still Sparrow, Rush is Barbossa, and Nighy is Jones.

to me the first one was good which made everyone c the second one which was boring since it had no conclusion plus very long and that's why no one really watched the last one which was good.

they should of just kept it with 1. same goes for HSM

At Disney's D23 they kept the movie surprises coming for nearly two hours, announcing a slew of new information about their upcoming slate of films for the next couple of years, and they trotted out John Travolta, Robert Zemeckis, Jerry Bruckheimer, Nic Cage, Miley Cyrus, and ... Johnny Depp in full costume as Captain Jack Sparrow. Yes, we're not kidding, and boy do I hate the "no cameras in the arena" rule that Disney busted on us. Of all the things to miss a photo of.

So yes, Pirates 4 is coming out in Summer 2011. Disney's Pirates 4 will be called Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and will be released in Summer 2011. Depp came out as Jack Sparrow, and asked if anyone had seen a talking frog. Well, stranger things have happened.

We should also point out (thanks to commenter Dan) that On Stranger Tides is the name of a Pirate-related book by Tim Powers. Is Disney adapting the book for the fourth movie? Did they swipe the title? What's the connection there, because there definitely has to be a connection.

I'm totally ready for a new POTC movie! They can start on a new story arc and introduce some colorful new characters which I think Russel Brand would fit in very well. The fountain of youth was mentioned at the conclusion of "At Worlds End" and I read that it is treasure which is being searched for in the Tim Power's novel as well. I hope Captain Hector Barbossa will be included, Geoffrey Rush is awesome!

Movie bosses have blasted reports that Johnny Depp is set to abandon ship - he isn't quitting the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise.

The actor sparked speculation he'll be replaced in his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in future installments after telling the Los Angeles Times his enthusiasm for the movies had declined following the departure of Disney chairman Dick Cook, who recruited the star for the films. He said, "There's a fissure, a crack in my enthusiasm (for the project) at the moment. It was all born in that office."

But a spokesperson for Disney insists Depp has not backed out of the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, branding the rumors "completely unfounded". The new movie is slated for a summer 2011 release.

I don't think anyone should be quick to jump to conclusions on this. Johnny loves playing Jack Sparrow, It's probably one of his best & favorite characters. I doubt he'd decide to leave the series, especially being one of the only couple of main characters who stayed on-board for Pirates 4.

Besides, seeing Jack Sparrow's actor replaced by someone else would be unimaginable. I don't know who would play Johnny Depp's character better than him. He's practically created Jack Sparrow.

Tim Powers confirmed to LA Times' Hero Complex that Disney did indeed option his 1987 novel On Stranger Tides three years ago, and that he's been eagerly sitting on the news for all that time. The author is unsure as to how Disney will adapt his book to the Pirates of the Caribbean mold. "The only thing I feel certain they will hold on to is the Fountain of Youth since they telegraphed that at the end of the last movie."

Powers' biggest concern isn't whether Disney will keelhaul his plotline, but whether the film will end up in Davy Jones' locker now that Depp's enthusiasm has waned. His hearty advice? "Nobody talk to each other, everyone just stand and smile, don't do anything to mess this up, let's keep this going, OK?"

Has Johnny Officially signed on now? Last i heard he was still waiting for the script to come in before he would say a legally binding yes. As for the novel i am going to assume that its sales just went up 100x.

I love Powers quote at the end though: "Nobody talk to each other, everyone just stand and smile, don't do anything to mess this up, let's keep this going, OK?" That seems to sum up the entire cloud of fog surrounding the movie very well.

I'd hate for them to replace the original actors. Doesn't seem right at all especially after 3 movies with them.
