If they make it, I won't go. Disney needs to stop beating the cash cow, like that'll happen, and just let the movies rest.

I can understand if some people didn't like the movies (or the changes to the ride) but I'm not sure that it makes good Disney-business sense to abandon a franchise that generated approx. $2.5 billion dollars in theater ticket sales, followed by plenty more cash from DVDs and merchandise along with an uptick of visitors to the parks wanting to see Jack Sparrow, pirates, etc...

In an down economy (or heck - even a good one), as long as you can put together another compelling story for fans: Bring us that horizon, Disney! Especially if the profits help cover park expansions and do-overs like in DCA!

Default Gore Verbinski: No more 'Pirates' life for me

Gore Verbinski: no more 'Pirates' life for me

Verbinski's had enough 'Pirates'

Variety
It's no longer a pirate's life for Gore Verbinski.
After spending the better part of the last six years directing the "Pirates of the Caribbean" trilogy, which grossed $2.6 billion worldwide, Verbinski has informed Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer that he will not helm a fourth installment that's expected to set sail in 2010 with Johnny Depp back as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Sequel is in development but not yet greenlit. It's unknown how Verbinski's ankling will affect the pic's schedule.

"I had a fantastic time bringing 'Pirates' to life, and I am eternally grateful to Jerry, Johnny and the rest of the creative and production team," Verbinski said. "I'm looking forward to all of us crossing paths again in the future."

I am not sure how I feel about another director taking on the franchise. We have all seen what happened to the Harry Potter movies, some great, some not so great. At the same time, I am glad for Verbinski because he can do other movies and grow his catalog and experience from doing other projects instead of wasting approximately 8 years in one style movie. Yet I am quite disappointed in reading he is making a new Clue movie based on the board game. There already is one out that is very funny with an all star cast.

I'm actually Happy with Verbinski's decision.
Despite Pirates amazing success, he seems to know when enough is enough, and move on to new films. I'm MUCH more excited for his adaptation on Bioshock anyways, and if it would have been the other way around that he decided to do Pirates 4 over Bioshock, I would have just been really upset.

If Verbinski isn't involved, i'm even more against it than I already was. Some say they should have stopped at 1. I see what hey mean but I disagree. The trilogy is fantastic and I love each one, but if a 4th is made, my money will not be contributed. I think its time to leave it alone.

If anything I think Disney should look at this as a sign to stop while they are ahead and create something new. Move on Disney.. How much money can you squeeze out of a stone or turnip or dead horse? I agree that the trilogy was awesome, fun and well worth the viewing, but it is time to move on.

I did think they should have stopped at the first film, and that the latter films are garbage. However, I think if they give the story for the fourth film a chance to gestate for a while and recollect what made the first one so good, this could be a good chance to redeem it. Yes Sparrow and Barbossa are still there, but if they can start fresh without the Turners and Davy Jones and all the rest - even Gore Verbinski - who knows?

I just don't think it will be the same without Verbinski. Time to move on. And yes Cory...NO MORE TURNERS!

Default Shooting in Spring '10

Pirates 4 starts shooting in Spring '10

Pirates 4 Starts Shooting Spring '10!

Coming Soon
Comic-Con is in full swing at this point, and ComingSoon.net got a surprise interview with Disney's Head of Production Oren Aviv where we talked about the genesis of some of the projects they were showing at the con, though we did have a lot of questions about future Disney plans as well. One of the movies that's still on the forefront of everyone's mind is the fourth installment of "Pirates of the Caribbean." Producer Jerry Bruckheimer told us a few weeks back that they were working on a script, but Aviv and Disney are definitely on board as we learned when we discovered that they have plans to be rolling film on the movie as early as next year.

"We're going to shoot 'Pirates 4' in April or May of next year," Aviv told us during our interview. "We are going to release it hopefully in 2011 is the plan." He said that this time they would only be doing one movie this time that would "hopefully be the first of another trilogy."

"It's important to get the story right and it's important to me to scale it down, because we can't get bigger," Aviv admitted. "The movies have subsequently gotten bigger and bigger and very complicated and they were satisfying on so many levels obviously, but I want to kind of reboot the whole thing and bring it down to its core, its essence, just characters." He agreed that there is a lot of Captain Jack Sparrow's back story that we haven't seen yet without confirming or denying that we might see some of that in the fourth movie. Still no word on whether Gore Verbinski might come back for the fourth movie.

Look for our full interview with Mr. Aviv very soon. It will definitely be of great interest to anyone who is wondering how Disney has been making decisions about some of the movies they've been making and will make in the future.

Russell Brand can be extremely funny. He's crazy and eccentric. I like to compare him to Robin Williams. He's just that kind of guy. But, like Williams, he can get pretty out of hand and inappropriate. I think if you controlled him he'd be a good comedic character or even voice actor.

However, the loss of Keira Knightley is enough to make me pass up Pirates 4 completely. The rumor of Pirates 4 made me groan and I was pretty iffy about wanting to see it. Losing Knightly made it not even appealing. The first one was awesome and embraced the ride. The second and third seemed to just flip off the ride instead of embrace it. They had no soul or depth. I fear that Pirates 4 will be even more shallow and unappealing than two or three. However, on the bright side, this may be their shot to make a better movie. They now have the opportunity to take a hard right turn and write a solid story with heart and soul. There are a lot of open options now, and with Knightly gone we can finally write off Will & Elizabeth. I'd like to see more of Capt. Barbosa and maybe have him get even with Jack.

I didn't like the 3rd one very much. It seemed so random and confusing at times... the end with Elizabeth and Will was just horrible. If she's not coming back in the 4th one to help them resolve that ending, then I say it's a wash for me. I may see it, but I don't have high hopes for it. My love for it ended after the second one.

Default New director for 'Pirates'

New director for 'Pirates'

Rob Marshall circles 'Pirates'
Disney in talks with director to take on film

Variety
Disney is floating Rob Marshall to take the helm of its fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film, a move that would put the film on track for a 2010 start with Johnny Depp back as Captain Jack Sparrow. While Marshall's involvement wasn't confirmed over the weekend, things look good enough that the studio is said to have begun casting new characters that will appear in the picture.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney have been meeting with a number of directors in recent weeks, because the studio wants to pull the Pirates film together and have Depp star in it before he does The Lone Ranger for them.

The emergence of Marshall as prospective helmer of the fourth pic surprised some in the industry. The choreographer-turned-director made his feature directing debut with the Oscar-winning musical Chicago and followed with Memoirs of a Geisha. He has returned to the musical route with Nine.
