No more foie gras appetizer at Walt Disney World

Disney's menu change is good for the goose, not the gourmet
Maybe Donald Duck squawked about the dish

Orlando Sentinel
In a move that thrilled animal-rights activists but disappointed some gourmet diners, Walt Disney World has quietly dropped a controversial delicacy from its menus: foie gras. On Oct. 1, Disney dumped the traditional French appetizer, made of fattened duck or goose liver, at the last four Disney World restaurants to offer it.

Disney insisted Friday that this was no political statement. Officials wouldn't even comment on the international animal-rights campaign that calls foie gras production cruel and inhumane and seeks to persuade restaurants to drop the dish. "It's really just about making adjustments to the menu," Disney World spokeswoman Andrea Finger said.Nonetheless, activists consider the Disney decision a victory.

Even though this is such a small fact about Disney-esque things, I still love how in depth I get to be updated on Disney! :D

Aww, that's too bad. Even though I do feel sorry for the way animals are treated, I would've liked to try foie gras just once...

Foie Gras I'm told is an acquired taste. I like it, but some of my friends find it disgusting.

Liver? I would stay away from it.

Sincerely, a brother of a half-demon,

Default Good Riddance

I'm glad to see this go. Foie Gras is quite possibly the least humane animal treatment that is currently allowed by the government. Whether or not it is a political statement, it's certainly a good thing for thousands of birds out there.

For those of you who are unaware, the preparation of gavage-produced foie gras, which is far and away the most common, involves force-feeding via a metal tube forced down the bird's throat three times a day for two weeks prior to its slaughter. The bird's liver swells up to ten times its normal size, preventing normal movement and frequently causing other internal liver issues. The process is so cruel that the state of California is currently in the phasing it out altogether, with 2012 the last year for legal production or sale of foods requiring gavage (from the French word for "cram") to make.

I don't think posting a link to pictures of gavage is proper for a family-oriented website, but I suggest that anyone who has or is considering partaking in foie gras run a google image search for "gavage". Many of the images are actually filtered on the default content level for being "explicit". Take a look at what excruciating discomfort you're putting animals through before mindlessly consuming "gourmet" food.

Foie Gras does nothing for me. Liver in general, be it from a goose, a cow, a duck, a badger or an armadillo, just makes me long for pizza or something.

The French have sure come up with some wild ideas in food preparation. There is a dish in the south of France where they take a pigs head and stuff it into the pig's bladder. When the dish is cooked, the bladder expands and turns clear and crisp. It looks like the pig head is wearing a space helmet. I'll bet they don't serve that at Disney World.

I personally couldn't be bothered to force feed a goose just to have something tasty to spread on crackers. Pass the cheese whiz please and leave that poor, poor goose alone, would ya?
