Disney's The Little Mermaid to premiere in Denver in 2007

The Little Mermaid, the new Disney musical based on the 1989 animated film of the same name, will make its world premiere in June 2007 at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts' Ellie Caulkins Opera House. Francesca Zambello will direct.

Disney Theatrical Productions President Thomas Schumacher told Playbill.com that the creative team for the musical's pre-Broadway tryout will also include Olivier Award-winning choreographer Stephen Mear, scenic designer George Tsypin, costume designer Tatiana Noginova and Tony Award-winning lighting designer Natasha Katz. Pulitzer and Tony Award winner Doug Wright ? of I Am My Own Wife fame ? has written the book for the The Little Mermaid, which will feature songs by Alan Menken, Glenn Slater and the late Howard Ashman.

Casting for the production will begin shortly.

Sierra Boggess to Play Ariel in Bway-Bound Little Mermaid?

The Denver Post reports that Sierra Boggess - who currently plays Christine in Phantom - the Las Vegas Spectacular - has been offered the role of Ariel in the upcoming Broadway production of Disney's The Little Mermaid. The 24 year-old performer, according to the article "cannot comment on the offer until a contract has been signed, which is expected by mid-February." The offer was reportedly made on Tuesday, January 23rd, and Boggess' father Mike commented "...She's originating a role called the Little Mermaid in a show called The Little Mermaid that's going to Broadway? What's to question?" No comment, however, will be made by Disney officials until casting for the entire show is complete.

Boggess - who has been a fan of Disney's animated film The Little Mermaid since the age of 7 - toured in Les Miserables prior to becoming one of two actresses starring as Christine in Phantom - The Las Vegas Spectacular, an abridged version of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera.

The Little Mermaid will receive its pre-Broadway engagement at the Denver Center Attractions at Ellie Caulkins Opera House beginning July 26, 2007. The production will then begin previews on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre (205 West 46th Street) on November 3, 2007 and open officially on December 6, 2007.

Since we have a new Broawday show opening I thought I would add a topic in it's honor. On the news front actress Sierra Boggess has reportedly been offered the role of Ariel. Sierra is 24 years old and currently playing Christine in the Las Vegas production of 'Phantom of the Opera.' Here's a picture of her:

Actor Cody Hanford is going to be playing Flounder. His credits include film roles in 'Walk The Line' (playing 9 year old Johnny Cash) and the upcoming 'Hounddog.'

'Aida' star Sherie Rene Scott is going to be playing Ursula the sea witch. Sherie's credits include appearances on Broadway in 'Aida' creating the role of Amneris, and starring in the original cast of 'The Last Five Years.'
