Default BYE BYE VMK...What was your favorite part?

Now that VMK is over what was your favorite part of VMK...mine was all the cool hats and how you can create your own room with all sorts of Disney stuff.

Even though I didn't play since like last year, I liked playing PotC, I also liked alot of the other mini-games. I but my favorite part was getting the submarine badge, and the car badge. Those were fun!

I would say that my favorite part was carving out my own little corner of Disneyness... That's what the user rooms and the items for them really allowed me to do in making my virtual Disney "home" and assorted rides. It was like imprinting my psyche onto Disney itself, building up my own reflection in an officially sanctioned way. My network of user rooms became my private Disneyland.

It was also a fantastic Disney fix. My peak for playing was in 2005 and 2006 between my two trips to Disneyland... After my first trip was emotionally mixed, VMK served as a catharsis that eventually provoked my second trip. I will admit that the second trip was so good that even after having done all the quests and things, I never played it quite as avidly thereafter. I didn't need VMK for quite the same thing after that.

However, it still worked wonders when I wanted a quick fix and to interact with these quite wonderful virtual environments. My favorites were the "Captain's Quest" rooms in Tomorrowland based on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, the castle and the "Jungle Cruise" rooms in Adventureland. Music was an important part too... I loved the melancholy twang of the twilight Frontierland hub and dock, as well as the loop in main street and town square. My favorite game was Haunted Mansion, Fireworks before they "remixed" it, and I had a soft little spot for Jungle Cruise even though they never remixed it to giving out decent credits.

Following from that, and from a more detached perspective, it was fascinating to see how they translated in-park things to VMK. I almost wanted to make a website that charted all of the visual references, like posting photos of the real castle in Disneyland Paris next to screen captures of the castle in VMK so people could see what the latter was based on.

VMK was also a great point of keeping me and my "Disney friends" from across the USA connected. We met on another Disney message board and hung out together in person on my second trip to Disneyland, but e-mailing back and forth about VMK and meeting in-game also helped to keep us on each other's radar. Now I have to see if I can get them on the same server as I am for PotC Online, and otherwise hope that we can sustain discussion without the constant source of reference!

I'm really sad that VMK shut down. It was the next best thing besides going to DL. VMK helped me out alot getting through the withdrawls. And let me tell you I've had alot of withdrawls, I haven't been inside the park since 2004!

But my favorite parts were the guest rooms. I hardly went to other peoples rooms though. I tricked out my own rooms and placed teleporters around so I could easily get from my pirates room to my haunted mansion room.

But my favorite game on all of VMK was The Haunted Mansion. I got to be really good at that game.

But now it's all gone. sigh

I myself find the fact that it closed down pretty depressing. I quit playing it a long LONG time ago. got a bit bored, found it a bit childish in a way. I didn't know it closed. it was a big thing to a lot of people... their lives even. I was fond mostly of the frontierland hub. frontierland itself really. well translated. but I am glad I eventually quit playing. it felt to me to be a bit of a waste of time on my part.

I traded with a passion. It was my favorite thing about VMK. That and building gingerbread houses...I loved that furniture set.

"VMK launched as a part of the Disneyland 50th Celebration and is now closed" I guess they sort of used the "launched as part of the 50th celebration" as justification for closure. but the site had been open for 3 years after the actual celebration.Soarin' in WDW opened as part of the 50th...don't see that closing

I had read that the software used to run VMK wasn't licensed for the long haul and because of that and VMK being free (read: wasn't directly generating income), it was closed.

Tomorrowland Furniture.
Tomorrowland Accessories.

The Rocket Chairs.
The Flying Saucer Chairs.
The Fishtank Water Thingy.
The Crater Couch
The Tomorrowland Series Pins.
The Tomorrland Store in General.
[before they opened up all the new tomorrowland]

I quit playing long before it closed though. I got kinda obsessed, and I was like "Woahh. Need to get off this thing." Haha.
