If your parents can claim you you don't get a refund

I'll probably spend it on a DL or WDW trip.

Do they know you are SUPPOSED to spend it? Spending it on bills defeats the purpose... though most people will LOL

^ Yeah, they both work in the travel industry (which is in a crisis now) so they hope everyone goes to Hawaii. So, if DL is not an option for you, could you please go to Maui or Oahu instead? lol

Paying bills isn't really defeating the purpose. Using that money now frees up other money later that now won't be spent thanks to this rebate. I'd like to see more tax breaks given to the income bracket of the most small business owners (whose business gets taxed on their individual return) to help them out, but this is good stimulus as well. Happy something's being done.

^ I think residents also get it. Just not illegal immigrants. Anyways, money makes the world go 'round!

It's anybody who filed a 2007 tax return and who can't be claimed as a dependant for the most part. But you need a social security number to file.

And it is coming from your 2008 year tax return (a loan against it). So it will be deducted from it that at time.
In other words, if you get a rebate of $600 this year and then add that to your normal return of say $600. You will have $1200 this year. BUT when you file your return for 2008 and get your normal return of say $600, then they deduct what they have given you this year. GUESS WHAT? Yep. No money back next year.
We really didnt think this was FREE money did we? It is just an early Loan against your 2008 taxes.
Which really stinks.

Wow! I wonder how many people know this? If it's true, I sure didn't know it! That will make a big difference as to what we do with our money! I guess that old saying is true...if it seems too good to be true, it probably is!

That's not exactly accurate. What it is is a new tax credit for 2008, that they are sending out early. It's like a one-time tax cut that you would normally get on your 2008 returns filed next year, but instead of waiting, they are sending them out now.

So let's say your rebate is 600. If they weren't sending it out early next year you would owe 600 dollars less than normal (or would be getting back 600 more than normal), but since they are sending it out early next year your taxes will be normal.

I believe it also means if you have a child before the end of the year, then next year on your return you will get the 300 dollar credit for that kid that they didn't know about this year.

Does that make sense?

You will get it. But if you were to say, not make enough to qualify you for the $600 well you still get it! If they mess up in your favor you get extra money but if they mess up against you then there is no penalty.

I'm making this real easy on myself - I'm not expecting to get squat. That way, if I don't get anything, I won't be surprised, but if I do, bonus!
