Default Sailing Ship Columbia

I am planning a trip 1st of Feb. 06.

Has the Columbia been running? It's been 15 years since I have been on it. Always seems to be a hit an miss on my annual trips, as to if it is running or not. Years past, Fantasmic has kept me from being able to ride.

You just have to ride it before they start prepping it for Fantasmic!. Try riding it around 1ish!

The Columbia seems to run rarely--I've only seen it operating in the summer months. Maybe you can call Guest Services and find out more about it's operating hours.

I think that an accident happened in the Columbia in the late 90's, and I thought they closed it for good. But when I came back in 2005, it was open again.

The accident was a no fault "freak accident" and The Columbia's safety was not blamed. But The Columbia dissapeared immediately for a long refurb to fix a gaping hole in the deck caused by the accident.

Here's what happened: The Columbia was moving a little too fast to dock properly, and the line that was cast to secure it to the dock tore the huge metal clete right off the deck of The Columbia and launced it at the dock, where it struck a waiting guest in the head and killed him. The rope was not a high tension line, it was a breakaway line that is supposed to snap when this happens, but it just didn't break. As I said "freak accident".

Well, there was blame on Disney for improperly training the CM, (the CM wasn't following procedure) so I wouldn't really call it a 'freak accident' since the cleat wasn't meant to be used in that fashion.

Default accident

The CM shipmate cast the line too soon, and the CM dockhand secured it. Both of them should have known that the Columbia was coming in too fast. That is a training problem, you're absolutely right about that, Chris.

But there was equipment failure as well: The columbia doesn't use high tension lines, it uses breakaway lines, so that in an event like this no damage occurs to the ship or the dock. OSHA confirmed that the line should have snapped, preventing the accident. The "freak" part of it is that the breakaway line just didn't break.
