Kudos and applause to you, Ez, for not letting lousy lodgings ruin your b'day trip -- your trip report was BEAUTIFUL.

Most hotels require a credit card to swipe for a deposit which you get back later. It's just to cover you in case you damage anything. I'm surprised you didn't know that. Seeing those pictures however, I doubt they would notice anything was damaged. What a dump! Thanks for the heads up -- staying away!

Most hotels require a deposit when you've made a reservation and will be paying on check-out. Not when you've paid in full, in advance. Of all the times I've flown down there, I have never been asked for that before, never.

It has to do with the purchasing of the room thru a broker, like Expedia, Hotwire, Priceline, etc. The hotel doesn't get your credit card/bank info from these brokers and everytime I've used these services they swipe my card or ask for a cash desposit. Times have changed and unfortunately too many people abused services like Hotwire and such to trash rooms or steal fixtures, pillows, etc.

That being said, there is no excuse for the room looking like this and I can only assume that the manager felt it neccessary to place you "one of the crappy rooms out back", because if this were a regular occurance, the health department/city would have shut this place down, which you should consider contacting - since you've got some nice photos to share with them.

I didn't answer this earlier. I was not at poolside; I was in the section behind the office. It was "one of the crappy rooms out back".

It's not like I expect much for $56 a night. But I do expect a bathroom clean enough to take a shower or bath.

I've paid in advance before, and any hotel I've been to like that, I've had to put a card on file when I check in for incidentals, but they've never charged it unless there was a need to.

The first time I paid in advance I assumed that they would. I even asked at the front desk (this was the Anabella), and they made a big show of protesting "Oh no, no, no, we don't need anything like that. We take take care of that with you at check-out".

The main gist of it is that that's what the agency I pay through says (that all incidental expences are to be paid upon check-out, with no mention of a deposit), and hotels I've stayed at have complied with what I agreed to... Except this one. It wouldn't have been an issue if I had the money, but this was a special, unusual circumstance.

Also, Instead of just having a card "on file" just in case, this general managar said that a depost must be paid, either in cash of by credit card, and that it would be refunded at check-out. I don't think most hotels actually charge you extra, and then reverse the charge when you check out.

So this is different than the norm.

There's a reason that I always pre-pay. I only use my bankcard at the same few merchants, and I've never had a problem with mis-use. When I came down to Anaheim for Disneyland's 50th, I used my card at the hotel. Three weeks later, I was overdrawn because someone else was trying to use my bankcard. It could just be a coincidence, or it could be someone at the front desk of the hotel is in the business of selling credit card information.

Ever since then I've pre-paid for a room so that the staff of the hotel never sees my bankcard.

Maybe Chris is right, that times have changed and I should expect this from now on. I'll have to plan for this from now on in case it becomes the norm. Perhaps I should buy a pre-paid card just in case it's needed?

Anyway, the whole deposit issue isn't is hardly relevent. My main complaint is that the general manager treated my like dirt, and that the room was filty! Personally, it doesn't matter to me whether all the rooms are filthy, or only the ones "out back": This hotel should never, not ever, rent a room like this to anyone, period.

I remeber I once stayed at a Ramada Inn that was pretty bad, but this looks like it tops it.
