Okay, the last review that I just wrote was about an awful property.
One of the worst motels that I have ever, ever stayed in. But that was nothing. This is, without a doubt, absolutely the WORST hotel that I have ever stayed at on a Disney trip, and that can get pretty nasty. The PARKSIDE INN AND SUITES. The room stunk, period. Smell was unbearable. Reeked of cigarettes and mold. The fixtures were ancient and broken. The bathroom was moldy and sickening, with broken tiles and rotten gunk in the window sills. There were cockroaches. Some of the other guests were loud and obnoxious, and the front desk refused to do anything about it. It also appeared that there were a couple of families that had taken up residence there. The door to our room had been kicked in before. The "Continental Breakfast" consisted of stale, ancient individually wrapped lil' debbie snacky-cakes of some sort, and coffee that tasted like lukewarm dirtwater. It was tastefully served in the pool maintenance room. There was gang activity on the streets at night when we were getting back from the parks. The walk is long, and along very dark streets. I saw several packs of young gang-bangers, and they were not looking to do good deeds. Several of the last gang tore fronds off of palm plants and were whacking cars with them as they walked along. Not good. Not good at all. The homeless people that were asking for money the second we got out of our room was bad. I do feel for them, I really do. But it was insanity. And when there was finally a schizophrenic transvestite standing outside the hotel on the corner talking to him/herself in a very, very loud voice, I just got incredibly annoyed and terrified at the same time. The walk is looooooooooooooooong to get to the parks. Don't believe their lies that it's "directly behind DCA". That is just an out-and-out lie. Period. And as I stated earlier, the homeless and the schizophrenic transvestite were there during the DAY. At night, you are literally looking all around you as you find your way back along dark, scary streets with no cops around and tons of people who would gladly do something bad to you just to entertain themselves. All of this may seem bad. But wait, there's more. On our last night there, we woke up at the crack of dawn to the sounds of a woman's bloodcurdling scream outside of our room. I got up and went out to see what in the heck was going on, and some woman was fighting with a guy in the parking lot. Two police cars showed up with sirens blaring and lights blazing, and broke up the fight, then cuffed the guy, who sat shirtless on the curb as the police interviewed the woman. Luckily, our transportation showed up shortly thereafter and we scooted. DO NOT STAY AT THE PARKSIDE INN AND SUITES. If you do, you are putting your family's lives at risk. I was very unimpressed by this place. Its ok for a room but if you want comfort in that room then you're out of luck here. The beds may as well have been rocks and the pillow was so flat you may as well have not had one. I had to go buy my own at a local wal-mart it was so bad. If you just need a place to sleep its fine. But if you need some comfort sleeping like myself, go elsewhere.
We were actually relcoated here by Expedia.com, but it sounds like it was a good thing. After reading the above post about Parkside, i'm thankful for Alamo cause that's where we were booked at first! Yikes. A big thanks to expedia for the save!

I've heard very good things about the HoJo there. An EXCELLENT site for checking the quality of hotels by user reviews is: www.TRIPADVISOR.com All you have to do is type the name of the hotel in, and up comes a page with honest reviews from real guests, in a 5-star, detailed rating system. For example, here is the page about the HoJo Anaheim Plaza Hotel: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...alifornia.html Have a look, it seems to have excellent feedback going for it.

I have to agree with Might Unicorn about TA. I have used it for the last two years to figure out hotels and things to do in the area. It's nice because it's not based off of what a critic has to say, it's from every day people. Sorta like this thread but in a more organized way (no offense at all to this thread) everything is listed within it's own hotel instead of going through pages of reviews to find just the one you want, which only one person has said anything about.
Also, I wanted to take the time to list two of my favorite hotels. 1st-Best Western Pavillions. It's right next to an ART stop and a 24 hotel Denny's. Very close to a gas station and Coco's (very yummy). Most comfortable beds I have EVER slept on. Very pretty rooms, and decently priced. I believe under a 90 a night. All around, I love this hotel. This one tends to fill up FAST. So I would book in advance. 2nd-Little Boy Blue. Okay, be warned this one is older and maybe not a family one. It was very cheap, less than 50 a night and what I believe to be perfect walking distance from the resort. I went with a friend and we both loved it, but my mom disliked the look of the place. The out side does look a little trashy and iffy, but the inside is very nice. They have done a lot to clean it up. The beds are pretty comfortable but not out standing. I would stay there again. If money is tight, I'd always pick here. However, keep in mind it is very small. Less than 20 rooms, so I'd book in advanced.

Anaheim Plaza Hotel
We loved it. Its not the nicest hotel, by any means, but it is decent. We went in May, and it was only about $70 per night - which is a STEAL of a deal considering it is right across the street from the entrance (east side across from the Tower of Terror). There is an Olympic-size pool, but there is no continental breakfast. You have to pay $8 or something if you want a meal there. But it did come with a mini fridge, and I think you can request a microwave as well. So I would suggest going to the nearest grocery store and picking up some yogurt and cereal or poptarts or something for breakfast. Not a bad deal at all. I will stay here again if I can get the same deal as we did in May.

Ramada Maingate Inn
I've stayed at the Maingate twice and both times have been pleasant. The rooms have recently remodelled bathrooms which are well-lit and clean. The beds and pillows are comfortable and clean, absolutely no signs of bugs or other critters, and the motel gives you special cards so you can indicate whether you want your linens washed every day to help conserve water, electricity, and help the environment. If you are at the back of the property walking there can be a bit tiring after a long day at the park, but considering it's location relative to the park, it's a minor inconvenience for what you get. (A double-queen room over memorial day weekend was $114/night with tax!) There's tons of parking, a poolside continental breakfast, and a coffee-stand on the property. It took only about 5-7 minutes to walk from the far-end of the property to Main St. USA, but it will probably take a little longer for those with children. Definitely give the Ramada Main Gate a try! |

Folks, I am telling ya.... if you want the best reviews ever, you absolutely have to go to www.TripAdvisor.com and just type in the name of the hotel.
The reviews are BRUTALLY honest, and they even have pictures from guests to back up their stories. It's not just star ratings for hotels. It's full-on written reviews, and there are specific categories for other ratings on each hotel, as well. For example, here's the page for the hotel you asked about, DisneyMommy403: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Rev...alifornia.html There are 22 detailed reviews of the place, and that should help you decide.

I use trip advisor too. Sometimes you can tell that a guest was just ticked off and posted some random thing haha. 21 A reviews and 1 F. It's nice cause there are SO MANY for each hotel. It's not just 1 good, 1 bad. We used that one for the place we stayed in Hawaii. It gave a pretty detailed and accurate picture of the place.

This is actually the same hotel we have stayed at 3 years running. It is a long walk... but we always tell them who we are and they give us our usual room upstairs that doesnt suffer from the same issues as the others. So we have never really had any problems. As for the atmosphere... I have never really felt unsafe... But then again... would you attack a 6'5" 300 lb. man? haha. So what is it that you dont like about the Del Sol? We are looking at it because it has suites for large groups for a great price and its right across the street. I am a bit tired of the Parkside communte. haha. |
