Default Young Frankenstein: The New Mel Brooks Musical

Welcome to the official thread of The New Mel Brooks Musical Young Frankenstein

For those of you who have not heard of this show, Young Frankenstein was based on the movie version of the same name the was released in 1974. THe story revolves around Frederick Frankenstein, an American lecturer at a medical school, played by creator Gene Wilder, who's engaged to the tightly wound Elizabeth, played by Madeline Khan. He is the grandson to the mad scientist known in the horror films that Mary Shelley created with Boris Karloff as the terrifying monster. So, Freddy pronounces his name as "Fronk-en-steen".

The film wasn't easy to make. Colombia refused to make the film in Black and White, which is what Mel Brooks wanted. So, they went to 20th Century Fox, who green lit the production.

In 2001, Mel Brooks put one of his movies, The Producers, on Broadway. It won the Guinness World Record for most Tony Award wins, scoring 12 out of their 15 nominations.

In 2007, Mel came back with Young Frankenstein. The cast did a trial run in Seattle before moving to New York. The cast included Roger Bart, who won a Tony for his role as Snoopy in the Broadway Revival of You're a Good man Charlie Brown and was part of the Original Cast of The Producers, as Frederick; Megan Mullally, who we all know from Will and Grace, as Elizabeth; the beautiful Sutton Foster, who won the Tony for Thoroughly Modern Millie, as the sexy lab assistant Inga; Shuler Hensley, who won just about every award possible for his role in Oklahoma!, as the monster; Andrea Martin, recently in Fiddler on the Roof, as Frau Blücher (insert horse whinnie here); Fred Applegate, who also was in The Producers, as the blind man and Inspector Kemp; and Christopher Fitzgerald, who originated the role of Boq in Wicked, as Igor (pronounced "eye-gor").

The show opened at the Hilton Theatre in New York City on November 8, 2007. Their cast recording, released under Decca Broadway, was released into stores on December 26th, 2007.

This is one of the funniest shows I have ever seen! Leave your comment on this amazing musical!

Interesting. I didn't know Mel Brooks went out and made Young Frankenstein into a musical. I wouldn't mind seeing this sometime. I own the movie, as should every comedy and movie lover out there. It is a classic with an all-star cast.

I adore this musical! Although I haven't had the privilege of seeing it yet, I DID see their Macy's Parade performance, as well as a spectacular performance by Megan Mulally singing "Deep Love" at the 62nd Tony's.

Although it isn't quite up to par with Mel Brook's INCREDIBLE musical, "The Producers," one of my all-time favorites, it's a gem of a musical. I shouldn't compare the two either, they're both incredibly different.

But, back to Young Frankenstein----

I love the cast. Some of my favorite stars such as Roger Bart, Megan Mulally, Schuler Hensley (Spelling?), and Chris Fitzgerald originated.

The songs are witty and keep true to the feel of the popular and spectacular original film. And oh gosh, I crack up when I hear "Transylvania Mania" and "Deep Love". Easily my two favorites!

EDIT: And how could I talk about Young Frankenstein without mentioning Madeline Kahn. She's one of my favorite actresses of all time. I love her performance in YF, and she's always spectacular!

I quote---

"You're walking out on me?? ME?? Oh, you men are all alike... Five or six quick ones, then you're off with the boys to boast and brag! WELL YOU BETTER KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!!

Ugh... I think I love him..."

Also, she gives a spectacular performance in "Clue" as Mrs. White !

I saw it in Seattle and really enjoyed it! Most of the classic gags from the film are there, so it's great for fans of the film.
