Default Water shortages = drought?

You think gas prices are awful? You haven't heard anything yet. Around here in Northern California, there have just been some water shortages and droughts, thanks to dry winters with very little rain and snow. And it's been warned that conditions of this type may be much worse if they persist into next year. Anyway, here's the article explaining such (from KCRA.com): http://www.kcra.com/water/index.html. Just read it and you should see what I'm talking about.

What are your thoughts?

I'm up here in the bay area too. I had a new lawn put in last fall. I'm not losing my lawn, again. We are an empty nest, only two, so we don't use all that much. But we are already conserving as much as we can. I'm shutting off water when shaving, stuff like that. I remember that during the last drought, we were allocated 300 gals. per day. We can manage that easily and still water the lawn.

Hi, fellow Bay-Areans! Sonoma County here. I've been conservation-conscious as long as I can remember -- I was raised "waste not, want not". My yard is landscaped in plants that don't require much water (lavendar and other mediterranean plants, mostly). I shut off the water when I'm brushing my teeth etc, I adjust the load size in my washing machine to use the least amount of water needed, I sweep the sidewalks, not wash them down. My municipality's version of water rationing is to have us cut back a certain percentage from last year's usage. So I'm basically being penalized for having been conservation-conscious all along! Growl.

Another Bay Area person here, Marin County to be exact... tight restrictions are going to get tighter. I remember the drought in the 80's. In my house shower water was then used to flush the toilet. Lawns were none existent. In Marin if you are caught watering your lawn, washing your car, rinsing your driveway you are fined substationally. They give you a window of 3 hours between 10pm and 1am to water lawns here and prefer you take your car to a wash station.

I guess quicker showers will be necessary...

Hey quick question, less water using the dishwasher or by hand?

According to about.com:
Quote:
If you rent, you may have no choice about your dishwashing method. But if you have the freedom to choose between an efficient dishwasher or hand washing dishes, opt for the dishwasher. Load it to capacity to maximize water usage, don't use the pre-rinse cycle, and don't fully rinse under a running tap before loading. As with all appliances look for the Energy Star certification.

If you wash dishes by hand, fill sinks or dish tubs to wash and rinse instead of running the faucet. A study at the University of Bonn in Germany showed that manually washing dishes could waste almost 30 gallons for 12 place settings, whereas dishwashers will use up to half that much.

Thanks for helping answer my question. I guess it is the dishwasher all the way for me then. Just the way I like it :)

Also use paper plates, paper cups, and SPORKS !!

Then there is the what we followed for flushing during the 70's drought..(seriously):

If it's yellow...it's mellow. (we kept a can of lysol and sprayed).
If it's brown...flush it down.

We also saved water that was running while waiting for hot water to use for
flushing and watering plants.

I remember my neighbors hooking up their cloths washer drainage to a long garden hose
to use outdoors.

And it also saves you time and your life, too; does a job that you don't have to do.

Here in Texas, droughts are the norm for the summer, so we all a re pretty much used to the way the conservation system works. My family's on well-water and we still do it, just because... it's a well. It's not infinite by any means, and besides, as one of my fellow VFrs said, 'waste not, want not' is the way a lot of us have been raised. Well, that and we've seen how quickly ice cubes can evaporate in the afternoon heat.

The local newspaper here published an article that we have at least 2 years of full water supply in reserve in case something happens to our NorCal water supply, or the connections to it. Good to be prepared.

Pshh...

You guys got nothin'!!! I live in Arizona. We have been in a drought for over a decade! We are currently using far more water than our enviorment can handle. We are growing at record rates and in a little while we won't be able to sustain ourselves. The only way we can keep up with demand is to buy water from other states.
