I don't think I have ever been more perplexed than when I watched the Twilight trailer?

What the heck is going on?

Well its about a girl who is basically in love with a vampire... And lots of trouble comes from it.

Oh and vampires can live forever. Thats why he says he's been seventeen for 'a while'

^ Except when they go into the sun or get stabbed in the heart with wooden stakes, of course. And holy water, garlic, and religious items aren't too great for their health either.

Or so you think.. Actually, according to the vampires in the book, those are all myths. And when vampires go in the sun their skin shines like a million diamonds.

But this is just from the book..

So...

They are vampires who are unkillable. That's a scary thought.

So what's the plot? Girl loves undead guy, grows old, dies, and undead boyfriend lives forever?

Its not quite over that amount of time.

(this may spoil the book for everyone who hasnt read it yet!)

So the girl (Bella) falls for this vampire(Edward), but it isn't until later that she finds out he is a vampire. And so as they fall for eachother mean vampires come to get her and Edward saves her. So she figures that if she becomes a vampire (by being bitten by one) she will be safe and so will her family. And loads of other things happen, this is over the span of three books. There is much more inbetween.

Oh and to kill a vampire you basically have to tear them into pieces and burn those pieces...

You should really read the books, they are fantasic and suspenseful! Even if I did tell you some things you find out in the books

^ Actually, someone at work tried to explain the books to me this morning. He said the first book was ok but not great, the second was dreadful, and third is supposed to be really good and bind the three books together. He said if you could suffer through one and two (especially two) then three would be worth it.

It sounds a little like Underworld.

Does anyone else find the books to be slightly... Repetative? I'm really not trying to be critical - In fact, I am enjoying the books quite a bit. It's just frustrating when some of the same situations keep coming up over and over again. Like how Meyer constantly reiterates the scenes where Edward is touching, kissing, etc. Bella and it "takes her breath away" and all that. Once would've been fine, even twice or three times wouldn't have bothered me, it just seems like that happens once every other chapter and it really seems to take away some of the romance (for me).

Or like, Bella will be hearing this strange noise and suddenly realize that it is HER teeth chattering, or HER sputtering for breath because of some horrifying thing she has just witnessed. That particular situation certainly came up more than once.

Even certain words pop up more than is necessarily (Meyer seems to have a thing for the word "chagrin", lol) when synonyms would've probably made the story sound more fresh.

I don't know - I'm probably being picky. (Please don't persecute me, lol) I just get a little fed up with that kind of stuff. Of course, I can't seem to stop reading the books, so it really is irrelevent.

I've never read the books. :P I just found out about it from all the Facebook groups, so I checked out the trailer, and it made absolutely no sense. I knew the guy was a vampire, so the whole time I was just like "uh... aren't you supposed to be roasting in the sun right now?" But apparently that's not how vampires work in this story. Instead, they're super heroes that attack deer and stuff?

Other thoughts-- it's Cedric Diggory!

Also, what's with her name? "Isabella Swan"? (I looked at the IMDB page too) Yes, that sounds like a believable name...

I mean, I'm sure someone out there must have that name, but it just sounds way too perfect. Might as well name her Rose Wildflower or something!

It is just the first chapter of the first book. She's not going to write a whole book from his view (so she says) but it was something fun she did.

^Really? I looked on her website and read the intro (haven't actually gotten around to reading the actual chapter yet) and this is what it says:
Quote:
But when a story demands to be written, there's no way to resist. And the more I wrote, the more I became convinced that Edward deserved to have his story told. At first I was planning to post it all here on my website, but I changed my mind for two reasons, the most important being that Edward's version is much longer than Bella's—Edward over-thinks everything. I'm not even half way done, and the page count is near three hundred. The second reason that I changed my mind is a little bit silly—I just would really love to have a pretty, matching, bound version of Midnight Sun to put beside Twilight on top of my desk. So I'm going to try to have it published as a complementary novel to Twilight
So I assumed that meant she was going to finish it.

Yes, but she much prefers to be called Bella.

I guess I see what you mean, though. It kinda reminds me of "Elizabeth Swann" from Pirates of the Caribbean.

Tom, maybe your friend thought the first two books were not so great because he is a guy. I've never really met any guys who have read them, so I don't know what the usual guy reaction to the books is. But I loved them all. I've already read them three times each. It is true though, the second book is a tough one to get through just because of some events that take place (if you are thinking of reading it I won't tell you what happens, but if not, I will tell you), not because it is a bad book. And I breezed through all the books, not wanting any of them to end!

And islandchica, I think Stephenie wants her readers to really understand how big it is for Edward to be so close to Bella at any given time, considering how her blood appeals to him like none other. And it also shows you how breath-taking he really is if he can take her breath away with one touch. I understand what you mean about it being every other chapter. I don't really notice that sort of stuff. But that may be the reasons. And Bella suddenly hearing her teeth chattering is probably to show that she was so distracted by that horrible scene that she didn't even recognize her own teeth chattering. Just to emphasize how horrible the scene she just witnessed was.

This is just my opinion. But I never really noticed those things. Its interesting to hear though because next time I read the books I'll be sure to notice. Haha!

Oh and Stephenie made an announcement on her website that she will be publishing 'Midnight Sun' (which is Edward's story). After Breaking Dawn releases she said she start finishing Midnight Sun.
Quote:
June 2008 Update: In response to the outrageous number of emails that I have received with questions concerning Midnight Sun, I talked to Stephenie this weekend and she asked me to let everyone know that Midnight Sun is her next project. She has not yet finished writing it (and there is no timeline set up, so we all need to put a lot of effort into being patient for a while longer), but she is definitely still planning on having it published. And, after Breaking Dawn comes out, Stephenie will have much more time to focus on writing Midnight Sun.

Tom, your friend may have not liked the books because he is a guy. I have never talked to any guys who have read the books, so I don't know what their reactions are. Islandchica, perhaps Stephenie stated that so many times is because she wants to really show you how amazing it is that Edward gets so close to her, considering that he is so drawn to the scent of her blood. And it may be there to show how truely breath-taking he is if he can take her breath away everytime with just one touch. Also Stephenie maybe uses the whole 'I heard a noise and it was my teeth chattering' to emphasize how horrific the scene that she just witnessed was. Like she was so distracted by what happened that she didn't even recognize the sound of her own teeth. But thats just me. Although now that you pointed it out, I'm gonna notice it everytime I read the books, haha!

Oh and to settle the confusion about Midnight Sun (Edward's story)... This is on Stephenie's website:

Sorry, I posted that twice.

But while I'm here I'll post one of my favorite quotes from the Twilight series other that Jacob saying, "Does my being half-naked bother you?"

Drum roll.... Here it is: "Before you, my life was like a moonless night. Very dark, but there were stars – points of light and reason. And then you shot across my sky like a meteor. Suddenly everything was on fire; there was brilliancy, there was beauty. When you were gone, when the meteor had fallen over the horizon, everything went black. Nothing had changed, but my eyes were blinded by the light. I couldn’t see the stars anymore. And there was no more reason for anything." -Edward Cullen *girly sigh* I love that boy.
