Default Those D*** Yankees! The Broadway Musical

Welcome to the Official Visions Fantastic thread of the Broadway Musical, D*** Yankees.

For those of you who have never heard of the show, D*** Yankees is about a man, Joe Boyd who sells his soul to the devil, Mr. Applegate, so he could play on the Washington Senators baseball team. With the addition of an escape clause, Boyd is transformed into 22 year old Joe Hardy.

The show is based on the novel The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant
The show's script was written by George Abbott and Douglass Wallop with music and lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross, who also wrote musical and lyrics for The Pajama Game.

The original Broadway Production opened at the 42nd Street theatre on May 5, 1955 and ran for 1,019, Closing on October 12, 1957. The cast included Gwen Verdon, who later played Roxie Hart in the Original cast of Chicago, as the sexy assistant to Applegate, Lola.

This was Bob Fosse's first choreographed show that was a hit. We know this show from the film as well as on the stage.

In 1994, a revival starring Bebe Neuwirth, later Velma Kelly in the revival of Chicago, as Lola, and Victor Garber, the original Anthony Hope in Stephen Sondheim's gory musical thriller Sweeney Todd: the Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

The last time the show was on stage was just recently. From July 5-27,2008, D*** Yankees was performed with Bob Fosse's original choreography during the Encores! season. It starred Jane Krakowski, who we all know from the NBC show 30 Rock, as Lola; and Chyenne Jackson, from Xanadu, as Joe Hardy.

Leave your comments here on this amazing musical!
