Default Song of the South

As most of you know, the movie "The Song of the South" has been banned in america for quite some time. Somehow, my dad got a copy of it, and I watched it for the first time, with high expectations. It was nothing like I had imagined it would be. I thought that the whole thing was going to be a cartoon, with Uncle Remus in the cartoon land like in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. It wasn't.

The only thing that I could base my assumptions on was Splash Mountain. I was looking forward to seeing all of those cool scenes from the ride, but none of them were there. I have to admit, I was disappointed. I don't understand where all this controversy came from. Why is there controversy? Because there is a black man speaking incorrectly? Ummm...That's not really a reason to ban a movie from ever being shown here again.

On the plus side, I thought that the animation was some of the best that I had ever seen. It looked computer generated at times, and I was really thrilled. It was funny too. I thought that Brer Rabbit was hilarious. All in all, I liked the movie ok...It just wasn't what I expected.

That's awesome! I'd LOVE to see the movie. I'm seriously contemplating buying the DVD from someone off eBay. I've read a lot about the movie, so I kind of know what to expect. I guess there's only three short cartoon clips in the movie, right? Still, I think that's cool. I've asked my dad about Song of the South and all he can remember is the Tar Baby. I kind of think that the reason Song of the South was banned was because people here are becoming too politically correct.

Perhaps I could be an assistance. You see, those audio animatronic characters you saw from Splash Mountain didn't come from the movie, well, except Brer guys. These characters come from an old Disneyland attraction called America Sings. It's an attraction that kind of simular to Country Bear Jamboree and sang one of the famous songs from America. It was at Tommorowland when they replace Carousel of Progress. They opened America Sings in 1976. And it closes in 1988. And if you go to gallery, you will find a complete video clip of the America Sings. And there have it. I hope this helps. Glad to be a service.

Song of the South is not "banned". It is just that many groups put alot of pressure on Disney until Disney decided to pull Song of the South completely. Actually, there are some rumors that the movie will be RELEASED for it's 60th anniversary, November of 2006.

The main reason that these groups did this is because of the way that Slavery was portrayed. I do not think I can really go farther into it.

PM me if you want Song of the south dedicated web sites.

I think that the main actor in that movie, James Baskett, got an Academy Award for it and was actually the first black actor to get an Oscar.

He did recieve a "Special Award"(according to the Academy Award web site) but actually, Hattie McDaniel was the first african-american actor(actress in this case) to win an Oscar. She won it for best supporting actress in "Gone with the wind" in 1940

You know what's funny? This movie takes place POST Civil War. Uncle Remus is not a slave.

Yeah, hence why Uncle Remus is allowed to leave the plantation freely. BUT, in the 1940's, the NAACP said that Disney was "sugar coating" slavery and that they portrayed an "idyllic master-slave relationship". But I have heard that currently the NAACP has no position on the film. And there were no complaints when Song of the South was re-released back in '86. And I have also heard from a web-site that Song of the South will become public domain in 2039.

AGAIN! If you want to know about all this stuff PM me and I will send you a link to a Song of the South web-site that has A LOT of info on the movie and stuff!

Well, it does take quite some time for something to become public domain.

I realize where the AA's came from, but there is also a story line in Splash Mountain. Everyone is greeting you, you go to the laughing place, and then Brer Rabbit is captured, his parents cry, he is saved and everyone is happy. I thought that that would be the plot of the movie but it definitely wasn't. As for where my dad got it. I don't know, and he's not here now for me to ask him. It was post slavery. I know Uncle Remus wasn't a slave, but there are some more black people that sing songs. They might be slaves. I never really understood their roll. 2039 is too far away. I want to get an official copy because I liked the movie and would like to see a great quality version. I hope it comes out in November '06.
