The History of VF

Is there a section in VF that tell's the history of how this site came to be? If not, could someone tell me? I am really anxious to hear it.

It's a fairly long story, but I'll try to sum it up.

VF began as "The Disneyland Source", a small (very small) member webpage on AOL in 1998. In 1999 we moved to Simplenet and used the address http://disneylandsource.simplenet.com

In 2000 we got a real domain and a different service and started offering videos from Robbie Rodrigues (Most of these videos are still on the site).

In February 2004 our web provider was unable to offer us their services because the traffic had increased so much. Disneylandsource.com was in limbo for awhile and the project was pretty much dead. Summer of 2004 I founded Visions Fantastic and we originally had some very different plans for VF (our original plans were somethine errily similar to VMK). The ideas were there but with no money to implement it, we essentially opened VF as a Disneylandsource.com 2.0 in August of 2004 and have been tweaking it ever since. "VF 2.0" opened just a couple of months ago as a direct response to people hot-linking to our materials from services like "Webjay".

So, we've really been doing this for quite awhile (Disneyland, web video) and many of the people are still actively involved (People like DCA Fan, CA ScreaminDude, DaddyB) have been associated with the project for years.

Robbie Rodrigues stopped making videos for Disneylandsource.com in 2002 or so and I think RU42 started featuring his materials here in 2003.

If you're curious about Disneylandsource.com, simply go to the internet archive at www.archive.org and type in 'disneylandsource.com' on the way-back machine. You'll find its possible, if you look long enough, to download some of our old audio and video clips! (although most of them are available on VF today).

It's amazing to think that there was a time where there might not have been a VF

There are some free "Online Role Playing Game" makers out there Chris... I've been thinking it would be cool to make a "Graphic" chat room for VF... basicly people on VF could log into the game and walk around possibly in a version of Disneyland... talk and play games... irrely similar to your idea and VMK... I just haven't been able to do it yet because I need the admin to accept me into the official forum of the maker and so I could learn to set it up. (Remember the thread I made?!)

The idea sounds very interesting, but unless VF had total control (things like advertising, etc) and the people to make it work, it just wouldn't work for us. Perhaps one day the software will be available to do it on our own without havign to rely on another software developer or company. Until then, we just don't have the time and energy to devote to such a project.

Wasn't some people on here experimenting with some kind of virtual chat room? It was all 3D and stuff...too complicated for me.

Sounds like you're talking about setting up a system like VMK is. I know of another site that has this set up. It was based out of the UK I think, but I cannot remember for the life of me what it was.

Coke.com has a similar thing set up with it's "be your own DJ" or something.

I remember i found DisneylandSource about 3 months before you went down. Also, wasn't there going to be an interactive tour of disneyland? I remember it was started, but the farthest I remember seeing was walking through the parking garage....do you know what I am talking about Chris?

Yeah, it is VF's own Hatbox Ghost. From I can recall, it was to be a Virtual Tour of disneyland with pictures and accompaning sounds. Chris can probably tell you more, like about why it didn't work out.

Intresting... on an internet archive (web.archive.org) it shows a "COMING SOON-Interactive Tour!" button on the menu. :/ hmmm
