Default Christopher Nolan Batman Series

Since the long awaited release of "The Dark Knight" is coming up in a few weeks I thought I'd create a thread all about the Christopher Nolan Batman series.

I have to say that Christopher Nolan is a fantastic director as he proved with Batman Begins whch was completely different than the cartoony Tim Burton?Joel Schumacher Batman films. Gotham City isn't Metropolis & Nolan showed us the dark side of Gotham City. Now as much as I enjoyed Batman Begins I was a little bored with Scarecrow as the villain as I's prefer bringing a classic villain that people would remember for years on. Anyways, I'm highly anticipating Heath Ledger as The Joker & already people are trying to give everyone's favourite Aussie an Academy award!

Anyways feel free to talk about Christopher Nolan's amazing superhero movies.

I get to see The Dark Knight in IMAX on openning day. I am looking forward to it. Christopher Nolan has done a good job with this series of Batman so far. I was impressed with Batman Begins and the trailers for Dark Knight look good so far.

Lucky! I tried getting tickets last week but unfortunately they were sold out! It's all good though, I'm cool with seeing it in a conventional theater.

I am extremely excited for this movie. I have been a Batman fan forever basically (no pun intended). When Batman Begins first came out in 2005, I wasn't too sure about watching it because of the abomination that was Batman and Robin directed by Joel Schumacher. After I left the theater watching Batman Begins though I was completely blown away by how good it was. To be perfectly honest, that was the movie that turned me onto the comics again.

Batman Year One, The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, The Dark Knight Returns, Arkham Asylum, The Killing Joke, etc. I've read them all and so far the Nolan Brothers have been true to the series. You could literally read Batman Year One and watch Batman Begins and they will match up perfectly. In The Dark Knight, from what I understand (and what I've seen from the movies) they're combining some of the plot lines established from The Long Halloween and The Killing Joke. It's no wonder why this is one of the most highly anticipated films of the year.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the comics, here are some fun facts that should prepare you for the movie:

* The Killing Joke is the comic that deals with the origin story of Joker. According to his backstory, he was an engineer at a chemical company who aspired to become a stand up comedian. After a run in with gangsters, he fell into a vat of toxic waste giving him a permanent hideous grin, white face and green hair.

* Another origin story for the Joker is featured in a series of comics from the early 90s that deals with a man who goes criminally insane and begins a life of crime because he cannot deal with his current life situation. In this story he decides to dress like a clown to hide his face from the public. During a botched bank robbery, Batman tries to stop him with a batarang and it cuts him from ear to ear giving him a hideous grin.

* The Dark Knight actually doesn't focus on the Joker, but rather Harvey Dent who later becomes the villain Two Face.

* Harvey Dent, who later becomes Two Face has his origin story in the comic The Long Halloween in which a criminal by the name of Sal Maroni throws a glass of acid in his face causing his second personality to come out as well as scarring half of his body. At this point, it is uncertain whether Sal Maroni will materialize in the film, or if the Joker is the one who will scar Harvey Dent.

* Harvey Dent will in fact turn into Two Face, but at the tale end of the third act of The Dark Knight.

* Wayne Manor is still being rebuilt, therefore there is still no Batcave, but, Bruce is currently living in a penthouse in Downtown Gotham where Lucious Fox (Morgan Freeman) designed and built him a headquarters to store his batsuits and tumbler.

* For preparation for the Joker, Heath Ledger spent 1 month in a hotel room doing nothing but researching the Joker (eg: he read all of the comics featuring the Joker, watched all the cartoon episodes featuring the Joker, etc.). According to the Nolan Brothers and various sources on the set, this is the true portrayal of the Joker and 100 times more psychotic than the Jack Nicholson version.

* To get a true feel for the schizophrenia of Two Face, the Nolan Brothers filmed Aaron Eckhart's (Harvey Dent) scenes twice. The first time around was normally, just like Harvey Dent. The second time around, he was in full makeup and acted like Two Face. During the editing process, the Nolans spliced both performances into one, so we really are seeing two completely different performances.

Other fun facts:

* This is currently the second movie in a trilogy. If the films are successful, the Nolans want to direct at least 3 more and finally film a Batman Beyond movie to bring the series full circle.

* The Nolans acknowledge the existence of a Robin and Batgirl, but aren't playing on it just yet. According to Christopher Nolan, Dick Grayson (the first Robin) is only a baby during the events of The Dark Knight and Barbara Gordon (Batgirl) is around 2. When the time comes to cast a Robin, they desire to cast an unknown actor around 12 years old (a true boy wonder). As for Batgirl, they desire to cast an unknown teenager (around 15 or 16) for the role.

* Although Harvey Dent/Two Face is going to be the villain for the next film (the title is unknown at this point) there are numerous possibilities the Nolans are tossing around for the next 3 (if The Dark Knight and next movie are successful). Some of the possibilities include Jason Isaacs as Mr. Freeze, Adrian Brody as The Riddler, Bob Hoskins as The Penguin, Colin Ferrell as Killer Croc and Kristen Bell as Poison Ivy.

Expanding on this the Killing Joke is one of the best Batman Comics ever written. The joker loses his wife and Child due to a fire and it shows that his madness is caused by one bad event. He tries to drive Gordon insane using this same line of thought. If you don't own this book go out and get it they recently re-released it.

I think one of the reasons the Nolan Batman works so well is that they took the Batman from the comics and managed to bring him into the real world. as much as I love the Tim Burton Batman he very much exist in a Tim Burton world. But the Nolan batman is intense and driven and very much based in a world where you can believe a man dressed like a bat can and does exist.

What makes me most excited for the new movie is seeing that shot of Gordon, Dent and Bats up on the GCPD roof. When I saw that the line from the long Halloween came to mind. "I'll let you bend the rules, but we cannot break them. otherwise, how are we diffrent from him."
This movie is going to be good.

I'm going to be perfectly honest, I got chills the first time I saw the full trailer for the The Dark Knight when I went to see I Am Legend last year. It reminded me so much of The Long Halloween that I went back and read it a couple times. But yeah, I know exactly what you mean about that scene. The more and more trailers and clips that come out just prove to me that the Nolan's did their homework (in terms of The Long Halloween and The Killing Joke). Although I am somewhat upset that they decided to turn Harvey Dent into Two Face unfaithfully to the comic. I don't want to spoil anything, but I will say that Sal Maroni will NOT be throwing the acid in Dent's face.

Also, I was watching a special segment on the news today about this movie. When they were interviewing the artists who created the Joker and the author of The Killing Joke, they explained that this was the closest anybody has ever come to capturing the true essence of the Joker. As they said, Jack Nicholson is a great actor and brought life to the character and Cesar Romero had the traditional look, but Heath Ledger got everything right for Joker. In my opinion, Romero (in case anybody doesn't know, he played the Joker in the original Adam West Batman series) was way too campy. Then again, I can understand why he was at the time. Jack Nicholson, however, did such a better job, but he was too comedic. If anybody has ever read The Killing Joke or any other comic featuring the Joker, he is absolutely insane. I believe that Heath Ledger is going to blow even the biggest of skeptics away with his performance.

I currently have tickets for both the Midnight and 3:00am showings for The Dark Knight and am even going as far as to camp out in front of the theater at 6pm so we can get good seats. Furthermore, I will be posting my thoughts about the film along with a spoiler free review once I am home and awake on Friday afternoon. Until then, "Why so serious?!?"

I can't wait to see this...although, unfortunately for me, on another site I visit, some idiot went in to every talkback forum and spoiled the ending with their user name alone.

Still can't wait to see how it all unfolds, though...

I watched Batman Begins again last night, just to prep for TDK, and I am amazed at the difference in that movie and the darkness I sense in the trailer for TDK. I am getting some serious goosebumps here.

He he...

I have my movie tickets waiting patiently on my table.

The one essential key to this movie being awesome is that it needs to be dark. It needs to be a little twisted and very dark. The Joker is a srtaight-up psychopathic killer. He has no motivation, no ultimate goal, just the twisted madness that is his mind. He's the perfect villian!

Judging from the trailer, it looks like they hit that darkness on the head.

Oh I hear the film is very dark from people who've already seen it. One of the darkest superhero films out there.

I am very excited to see the Dark Knight, and I can't wait to finally see it on screen.

I am totally torn between wanting to see The Dark Knight, because it looks totally awesome, and being hindered by the presumably extremly violent content. Having just read a Focus on the Family review for it, I am even more confused. Maybe I'll just wait until friends go see it to make my final decision.

Default The Dark Knight

This movie was amazing.

I really ought to just leave it at that and say, 'go watch it yourself', but I suppose I should elaborate just a bit (spoiler-free). As reported, this movie is extremely dark. It picks up on the Batman Begins idea of discovering your true self, your true identity, and builds on it through several characters. Ledger's performance was unnervingly twisted, and nothing short of brilliant. The movie is violent and has some very graphic imagery (I'm almost surprised this film didn't net an R rating because of its constant darkness and fear, the psychopathic antics of the Joker, and the aforementioned images), so I'd advise against taking young children or someone who gets upset by such things. That said, Christopher Nolan has far exceeded my high expectations. This could easily become an Oscar-winning film on many counts. I couldn't recommend this film highly enough.

In my past movie reviews and opinions, I have always analyzed the movie and given my thoughts as to whether I liked it or not, then explained what I liked and didn't like. The Dark Knight is one of the very few films that I have ever seen where I found no flaws whatsoever. It is, in my opinion, the BEST superhero/Batman movie I have ever seen and the way it was done was so perfect that it can easily be a stand alone film. In all honesty, this film is Oscar worthy. I'm not saying that out of sympathy for Heath Ledger, but because I honestly believe it was that good. As uscfan said above, the film is really dark and violent so it's beyond me why it wasn't rated R. I do have to warn everyone out there though, the effects that they use for the transformation of Harvey Dent into Two Face was absolutely graphic and terrifying to some.

I'm pretty sure by now you have figured out that I have given this movie **** out of ****. That's it. That's all I can say about this film. Go see it and have fun. This isn't your average superhero movie. This is more. It's a drama, horror, thriller, character study, etc. It's all of these genres mixed into one. This movie definitely lived up to the hype it created allowing me to really believe that Gotham City really exists and has a dark knight.

Now that was the Batman Movie I've been waiting for. It was perfectly executed and the Joker was as insane and psychotic as he is in the best Batman comics. As everyone else has said it's a dark, dark movie. The violence in the movie isn't gory or bloody but it is intense. If I had to describe this movie in one word it would be "Epic". 5 stars.

I just saw this movie and was just wide eyed the whole time. It truly was the best Batman movie to date. Just sheer brilliance. Very dark and very intense yes and I couldn't stop loving every frame that went by.

It really is sad that Heath has passed on because his acting was so awesome in this. I only wish he could have continued the role. You couldn't help but hate and love The Joker in this movie and Heath's portrayal made it brilliant.

I really liked how it showed Batman's intense darker side as well as his passionate side. They really picked a great cast of people to portray the faces of the Batman series. I would love to see how they made Harvey Dent's face. Obviously CG and some make up but just how they did it. Very awesome.

Overall I too would have to give this movie a BIG 2 THUMBS UP. It was worth every penny I spent to see it as well as the drink and Red Vines to accompany it LOL.

Default The Triumph of Gotham, A Third Batman Film

This movie would be a third film following "The Dark Knight" & would be about Batman trying to confront Two-Face who reminds Bruce of his life when Joe Chill killed his parents. It also fetaures a subplot about a claw firm who has been searching for a disappeared Carmine Falcone only to discover that Two-Face is part of the reason for his disappearance.

Here's the new supporting characters:

Carl Waters (Fred Savage) a corrupt lawyer who becomes infatuated with Rachel Dawes. He is leading the search for Falcone but is secretly assisting Falcone in return for a large supply of weaponry he'd use against the GCPD.
I chose Fred Savage in the role because of a performance he did on Law & Order a few years ago. I also remembered an episode of Boy Meets World where he played a teacher who acted as a villain for the episode.

Jervis Tetch (Colin Hanks) a drug dealer from a bad area in Gotham who is known for his strange clothing & obsessions with the book, Alice in Wonderland. His role in this film is minor but the character will return in a fourth Batman film as The Mad Hatter but he wouldn't be the main villain (he'd be more like Sal Maroni or Carmine Falcone in villain terms.)

Rupert Thorne (Brain Austin Green) a smuggler who is also known as one of Carmine Falcone's hitman. He was secretly part of Ra's al Ghul plan in Batman Begins. He & Falcone escaped Arkham when Ra's & Sacrecrow freed all the prisoners. He is played by the actor known for his role as Derek Reese on Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

That's my idea what do ya thunk?
