Hello!

I read somewhere that Omnimover attractions, such as The Haunted Mansion, are considered dark rides. I'm not sure if I want to use an omnimover for my attraction or not, but I was just wondering if that would count as a Dark Ride, just in case I change my mind.

Thanks!

It depends on the type of ride. The Haunted Mansion is an E ticket, Buzz Lightyear is a D ticket which I would consider a dark ride.

And yes, Dl4e, it must be an E ticket

I'm worried about the length of my project. What do you think is the appropriate amount of words used, Lightech? I don't want it to be too long but that means leaving out detail.

^I don't think Lighttech minds detail as much as he minds going on about things that don't really matter. For example in your case BB, you tend to put emphasis on EVERYTHING, so once we get to the actual main part of the project, we've already slightly lost interest. I'd just concentrate on getting the ride done, then the other things, and putting the detail in last

Try and say what you want in little words as possible, don't describe everything in detail, give descriptive words that sum up most of what you are trying to say. I don't want a paragraph on something that could be said in one sentence.

Speaking of telling to much. Here are Mickey's Ten Commandments. Rules #1, 3 and 6 are very helpful to those you write to much (Wink wink)

1. Know your audience - Don't bore people, talk down to them or lose them by assuming that they know what you know.

2. Wear your guest's shoes - Insist that designers, staff and your board members experience your facility as visitors as often as possible.

3. Organize the flow of people and ideas - Use good story telling techniques, tell good stories not lectures, lay out your exhibit with a clear logic.

4. Create a weenie - Lead visitors from one area to another by creating visual magnets and giving visitors rewards for making the journey

5. Communicate with visual literacy - Make good use of all the non-verbal ways of communication - color, shape, form, texture.

6. Avoid overload - Resist the temptation to tell too much, to have too many objects, don't force people to swallow more than they can digest, try to stimulate and provide guidance to those who want more.

7. Tell one story at a time - If you have a lot of information divide it into distinct, logical, organized stories, people can absorb and retain information more clearly if the path to the next concept is clear and logical.

8. Avoid contradiction - Clear institutional identity helps give you the competitive edge. Public needs to know who you are and what differentiates you from other institutions they may have seen.

9. For every ounce of treatment, provide a ton of fun - How do you woo people from all other temptations? Give people plenty of opportunity to enjoy themselves by emphasizing ways that let people participate in the experience and by making your environment rich and appealing to all senses.

10. Keep it up - Never underestimate the importance of cleanliness and routine maintenance, people expect to get a good show every time, people will comment more on broken and dirty stuff.

I could have sworn that there were fifteen commandments, including to never bring pop culture into classic rides, and to never create a theme park about a state which has nothing to do with said state. However, Mickey could have taken a spill similar to Mel Brooks and discarded those extra ones, considerring the above have happened, and failed... miserably...

Why does everyone think its Imagineerings fault. Its not. They only do with what they got. Budget, space, time. Those all have an effect on the end result. Those, though, are all from Marketing and TDA, nothing to do with Imagineering. Imagineering can only design with whats given to them, nothing more nothing less,, they arent gods, they cant do EVERYTHING.

Ok lets take a side track here and go into why DCA failed.

1) Budget was cut almost in half before construction finished
2) Look who was in charge at that time (note spitting on said persons stone is not condoned, but is very fun to do)
3)They only had 55 acres to put the park on.
4)The park does have everything to do with the state, you just have to look hard There are little thematic things that bring the history of California alive. Disney, after the budget cut, decided to do a park that has never been done before by Disney, a new experience. Thats what they had to do with the new budget to keep the park construction progress going They didnt want to, but they had to get it up Ever since then, they were working ok plans to fix it up how it was supposed to be Those are the plans you see today

Default My Entry

Hello!

Here’s my entry for Project 4 of So You Want To Be An Imagineer.

------------------------------------------

Location
In Disneyland, the Wall-E attraction will be featured where the Starcade now sits, and part of Redd Rockett’s Pizza Port will be taken out to make room for the Buy and Large Bar, and Tomorrowlanding will become Wall to Wall Wall-E. The blue line represents the attraction, the yellow line represents the shop, and the red line represents the restaurant.

In Hong Kong Disneyland, the shop, attraction, and the restaurant will take use the building now occupied by the Starliner Diner and the Comet Café. The rocket out in front of the building will be re-themed to look like Eve’s ship.

Attraction – Wall-E’s Axiom Adventure

Wall-E’s Axiom Adventure is an E-Ticket dark ride experience that puts you in the place of a 22nd

century human living on a once-beautiful earth that is now polluted, filled with trash, and has no

wildlife. Lucky for you, Buy and Large has a solution. While they take care of the mess that the humans

have created, you and the rest of Earth’s inhabitants will travel into outer space on a luxury starship

called the Axiom. You are about to enter an informational presentation to fill you in on the plan to whisk

you away during clean-up and safely bring you home once the earth has returned to its original state.

As you enter the queue line (which has the color scheme of blue and red; Buy and Large’s

colors), several screens play videos of Shelby Forthright, BnL president, telling you about the tour and

what you should expect. He also informs guests of safety and health precautions to prepare you for your

tour. He’ll also tell you about your ride vehicle.

The ride vehicles for this attraction are small buggies that seat up to six guests; three in the

front row and three in the back row. There are lap bars in both rows for safety, and a small video screen

in each row for the narration of the tour by Shelby Forthright. Their design is inspired by the design of

the Axiom. A BnL logo is featured on the back. But there is more to these vehicles than what meets the

eye. I chose to create a new kind of ride system for the new technology to be featured in this attraction.

The ride mechanism used is very similar to that of a monorail. Wheels placed sideways in the vehicle roll

along a beam, propelling the buggy forward. What sets these buggies apart from a monorail, other than

a smaller system, is that the car has the ability to transfer from traveling on the floor, like in dark rides

such as Snow White or Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, to hanging from the ceiling, like in Peter Pan’s Flight.

Wheels are featured in both the bottom and in the hood of the buggy, allowing the car to easily transfer

from one ride experience to another. The smooth movement of the wheels allows for an easy transition

from the floor to hanging. Here’s some diagrams of the mechanism:

Once you’ve made your way through the queue, you board your ride vehicles at a futuristic

loading station and your video screen turns on, playing a video of Shelby Forthright standing at a BnL

podium.
“Greetings, earthlings!” He says, “ I’m Shelby Forthright, Chief Executive Officer of Buy n Large. Thank you for participating in this short orientation that our fine corporation has put together to make you feel more comfortable with leaving your home sweet home-Earth.”

The first scene you enter is located on earth. Filth and piles of trash surround you. The smell of garbage is pumped in using scent boxes, and the sky is a sickly brownish-green.

“This is earth as you know it. Smelly, dirty, and filled with trash. Don’t you sometimes wish there was a solution to all of this? Lucky for you, there is!” Forthright continues.
Out from amongst the trash, a Wall-E robot appears, holding a cube of trash.
“…And here it is! We call him WALL-E, short for Waste Allocation Load Lifter-Earth Class. Hundreds of thousands of these WALL-E robots are being created today to help tidy up our planet-Your home. While you’re up on the Axiom relaxing and living a life of luxury, these little guys will be making sure that the earth is nice and clean for your return home.”

You now see Eve’s rocket and a deactivated Eve as you turn the corner. Wall-E emerges from behind a trash pile and watches her in awe.

“To keep tabs on how well our clean-up program is working on earth, we’ll periodically send these Extra-terrestrial Vegetation Evaluators, EVE for short, to check on the earth. Now folks, I’m going to show you the most impressive thing yet: The lovely view that you’ll have from our glorious Starship.”

At this point, you pass through a doorway and off of a drop-off into a large room decorated to look like space. Your buggy has transferred to hanging mode, and you find yourself dangling over a vast black area surrounded by twinkling fiber-optic stars, planets, and a large figure of Wall-E looking around, holding onto Eve’s ship.

“Behold: Space. The final frontier.” Forthright continues, “Imagine waking up to a beautiful view like this every day. Glorious views of planets, galaxies, and stars outside your window, 24/7. It’s all yours when you travel with us.”
You now turn a corner and see a large portion of the axiom amongst a nebula (like in the movie).
“We now arrive at the axiom: The climax of our tour. Now, let’s enter and see the luxuries that await you the minute you leave home.”

You travel through a hangar of the axiom and see a group of robots working on different machines and loading in ships. As you enter the Axiom, you return to traveling on the floor. You see Eve’s ship, with Wall-E still clinging to it, being brought in by a group of robots.

“A completely robotic crew allows you to relax and enjoy your cruise without lifting a finger,” Forthright continues.

You pass several other scenes within the Axiom, including the pool, the beauty parlor, etc., with the captain describing them all and telling you how fabulous they are. You then move into the Captain’s quarters, where Wall-E and Eve are giving the Captain the plant.

“Now, my friends, our robotic friend EVE will let us know when the time is right to return to earth by bringing us back a living plant. At that time we will know that the earth is again healthy enough to live in, and that we may make our trip back to our home.”

As Forthright continues spieling about the luxury and good life of living on the Axiom, you “exit” the starship through a porthole and again begin to hang. You then travel through a cylindrical-shaped room (similar to the one in Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin at the Magic Kingdom) that plays a loop of Wall-E and Eve “dancing” in space. You return to the earth, and ground transportation, and see the Captain teaching a group of children from the axiom how to plant plants, with Wall-E and Eve holding hands while music from “Hello, Dolly” plays in the background.

“Once we return to earth, we will educate future generations about once again creating life on earth. Thank you for joining us on this orientation, and we hope that you enjoy life on the Axiom. See you soon!”

The screen then turns off and the buggies return to the loading dock.

Shop – Wall to Wall Wall-E
Wall to Wall Wall-E is a gift shop themed to resemble the truck that Wall-E uses as a home

and as storage for the treasures that he finds while cleaning up the trash on the earth. This shop will

resemble Wall-E’s truck on the inside, but the appearance of the outside of the shop, other than a

change in signage, will remain the same as it is now.

Merchandise in the shop is displayed on large racks like the ones that Wall-E uses in the

movie to store his treasures. The easily accessible racks will feature merchandise, but the racks out of

reach to guests will feature items that Wall-E would have found in the movie. To add to the theming of

the shop, a TV in the corner plays scenes from Hello Dolly, unusual lighting such as Christmas lights are

used, and Wall-E’s tracks are painted on the floor.

Unlike some shops at Disneyland, everything sold at this shop fits the theme. Only merchandise

having to do with the film is sold. Some examples of what you might find at this shop include Rubik’s

cubes, remote control Wall-E and M-Os, Wall-E CD players (that work like he does when he plays the

song from Hello Dolly in the movie), rubber cockroaches that look like the one that Wall-E befriended in

the movie, and Wall-E pins, to name a few.

Restaurant – The Buy n Large Bar

The Buy n Large Bar is a small café themed to look as if you are in the Axiom and looking out

at Wall-E and Eve as they float through space. The room is circular in shape, with a counter with

barstools running the length of the wall. A series of curved video screens form the dome-shaped ceiling.

These video screens and play a loop of Wall-E and Eve flying through space. The floor has a large “BnL”

logo on the floor. What makes this restaurant unique is that no wait staff is needed. Upon entering the

restaurant, the guests are seated by a host or hostess at the front, and from there on, no other cast

member is ever seen or needed. Each guest is given a slip of paper somewhat like a ticket, on which they

take their order. It looks somewhat like this:

Rather than simply “Food”, the menu would feature a variety of meals and drinks themed to

space and themes from the movie (For example, the “BnL Burger”, “Cosmic Coke”). Each guest is

given a pen with their menus and checks off which items they would like off of the menu. They tear off

the bottom of their menu so that they can easily remember their number, as it is very important to

remember your number later on. Now, here’s where things get really interesting:

Above the counter, a conveyor belt stretches around the perimeter of the room. In order for the

guests to be able to easily enter the restaurant, the conveyor belt is split at the entrance. The beginning

of the conveyor belt is located in one side of the kitchen, and ends at another. When guests have made

their food selections, they place their menus onto the slowly moving conveyor belt. Once their meals

have been prepared, they are delivered to guests via the conveyor belt. Each meal has its respective

guest’s number placed prominently on it so guests can retrieve their food from the belt. After the guests

are finished eating, they simply place their empty plates back on the conveyor belt, and they are

whisked back to the kitchen to be washed.

Though the title of the restaurant is the BnL Bar, no alcoholic beverages will be served. The title

“Bar” refers more to the layout of the restaurant, and not to what is served there. It will be family-

friendly and will feature a kids’ menu that looks similar to the adult menu, but features kid-friendly

foods and comes with a separate coloring page and crayons.

---------------------------------------------------

And that wraps up my fourth project for So, You Want To Be An Imagineer. Thanks for reading, and have a magical day!
