I'd like to know what Paul and Ringo think about this.

To be honest, I hate remakes. They never seem to do justice to the originals. However, this is a catchy little tune that would be fun to hear all over the radio again: "We all live in a yellow submarine, a yellow submarine, a yellow submarine....."

Considering it would include the rights to 16 songs (according to the article) wouldn't they have to have a say? I'm not sure where everything stands where the whole Beatles' music rights issue right now...

True, but who knows what songs Paul does have the rights too or what songs MJ's estate has the rights to.
But don't they have to get permission to use their likenesses anyways? Anyways, Considering Disney made Fantasia, I think Disney in itself could do a great version of this without Zemeckis.

To my understanding, Michael Jackson's estate doesn't even own the rights anymore - Sony Music does. The remaining control he had was taken up by his outstanding debts (somebody please correct me if I'm wrong).
Anyway, back on topic - See this is where I begin to get frustrated. If they have to give permission for likenesses, who's going to voice it? It won't be THE BEATLES, so will they even use likenesses or come up with something different? Seeing as how Zemekis like to use A-List actors for his motion-capture, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't resemble the Fab Four at all. Really not sure how I feel about that one. |

I love Yellow Submarine it's my favorite animated movie! I'm glad that Zemekis/Disney to remake this film!

Yeah, I think your right about MJ's music rights of the Beatles collection.
Well the Beatles didn't really voice their own characters in the original either. Only as Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Yellow Submarine (1968) So who knows. The article did mention they are in talks with the legalities so all this could be under those discussions.

I don't like this idea at all, the original film is to me a classic & I think a remake will ruin people's look on that film. I'm wondered that'll happen when Tim Burton remakes Alice, people will forget about the classic & just remember the remake (no matter how bad it may turn out)
I remember back when Robert Zemeckis made good films like Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Forrest Gump & Cast Away now he just relies too much on animated films like Beowulf & Polar Express which I both thought were overrated (A Christmas Carol looks interesting though but maybe I'm just too big of a Jim Carrey fan) Yeah to me Yellow Submarine will probably become an unnecessary remake. |

Variety is a major trade paper, and a very reliable source. I would have run it as News even though it's "quietly" in talks. ...but in this case, I hope it's not true. If it is true, I hope the negotiations are'nt sucessful.

An army of entertainment lawyers are going to make a lot of money from this whether or not the movie is ever made.
I am a huge Beatles fan. Next to Disney, the Beatles are my biggest obsession. I saw them on the Ed Sullivan show, can play all their music on guitar and piano and will purchase the soon to be released re-mastered version of their entire catalog even though I already own their entire catalog. But I have no interest whatsoever in seeing a remake of Yellow Submarine. The original is a unique film which is of it's time and really needs no "improvement" or any re-interpretation. I am sick to death of remakes and Yellow Submarine strikes me as a film which has about the least need of a remake of any film in history. Due to the complex nature of this project, I think it highly unlikely that it will ever be made. I hope that no agreement can be reached and this project just quietly goes away.

I definitely feel that Yellow Submarine is one of those films that should be left as is, unmarred by a remake.
I've seen things in Variety that never came to pass (Pretty Woman 2, anyone?), so I'm just going to hope this is one of those times. |
