So, no rumors on the new destinations, like the Naboo express and whatnot, hmmm i never found REX annoying before, but thats just me. I know its just a rumor, but i wonder how they would make the ride work without a pilot or probably get a less "annoying" robot, hmmmm?

I think that they should do your second idea...that robot really annoys me sometimes, although other times it isn't as annoying, but still...

^ Let's not forget that Rex made it into Remember...Dreams Come True.
There have been plenty of rumors what the *next* Star Tours ride will be, but they've all only been purely speculative rumor. What we do know is Lucas vowed never again to work with Eisner. Even though Iger's in there now, Lucas isn't going to become all buddy-buddy again with Disney all that quickly. If anything new is coming to Star Tours, it probably won't be there until 2009 at the earliest. -- Peoplemover "Episode 1 will be 10 years old in 2009! " Matt

Someone on theforce.net said this:
My family and I visited Disneyland (Anaheim, California) and had a talk with [Star Tours employee]. Star Tours was still fun but it has not changed in years (if at all). I asked [the employee] if the attraction was ever going to be revamped to tie into The Phantom Menace episode. [He] said that Disneyland's operating budget has gone mostly into building the new Explore California themepark, which opens summer 2001 and the new and improved Autopia which opens summer 2000. [He] speculated that Star Tours would not get updated until George Lucas was completely done with the first trilogy and subsequent DVD saga in 2005. An unnamed source told them: The updated new ride film for Star Tours, based on TPM of course, was supposed to be a big Summer project for ILM. John Knoll and his team were all set and ready to work on it. The problems have all been on the Disney side of things. And Disney may have delayed so long that even if they got their ducks in a row right now John and his group may be otherwise occupied. Thanks to Disney it may be quite a bit before anyone enjoys a new version of Star Tours. The original plan was for work to begin on the new Star Tours almost immediately after TPM was finished. The new Star Tours (whenever it comes together) is planned to be a 3D ride film requiring Disney Park guests to wear 3D glasses. That means twice the rendering time for ILM because both left and right eye images need to be created. This is one of the reasons why delays on Disney's part have caused problems for ILM. But a CM working at Star Tours in Disneyland countered: i was wondering where you got you source on Star Tours having a new movie as of May 20...becasue i work at the attraction and can tell you that i have spoken with trainers, show assessors, supervisors, maintanence, WDI, engineering, and my co-work spoke with Lucas himself on his last visit this past July. I can assure you that Star Tours will NOT be getting a new film to coincide with the release of TPM. It will be at least a year before Star Tours will renevate. When it does, it will get a new system featureing a 3-D type film, which will require Star tours to close down for a number of weeks to re-do the attraction. CMs were right again! |

^ That all sounds like it happened in 1999 sometime. It's really old news that the pod-racer movie wasn't coming into Star Tours, although that was the strongest rumor at the time. I'm not sure if you're trying to show that CMs are good sources for DLR news or what here. Front line CMs are generally the single worst people to get scoops from.

I think a 3D film would be awesome for star tours, however I have a few hopes. Star Tours suffers some problems with it's old film projections such as getting out of synch witht the movement of the simulator this could be solved with digital projection. However, digital projection lacks the depth that film has. For this reason, 3D seams ideal, with 3D digital could be used and you would have awesome depth, which brings me to my next point. I LOVE 3D, infact so much that I have a quite pricey 3D theater system in my home (no cheap red/ble glasses here). BUT real life is nothing like a 3D film where things pop out @ u and such. I think if star tours uses 3D it should simply be to create depth, the only situation I would have things pop out for is if something broke through the "windshield" and flew into the starspeeder, but even that may be tacky. WHat does everyone else think?

That be awsome, but i wonder how they'll use the glasses, i mean like they did with Honey i shrunk, to protect you from flying stuff, with Star Tours, hmmmm i think of something in the line of making your trip a "safe" one. Yeah, it would be something i'd like to see imagineers make possible.

To answer PeopleMoverMatt, I know it's from 1999, it's just what TheForce.Net returns when you search for Star Tours.
And about 3D, I think that would be too much. The simulation is intense enough as it is for some people. |

What I would do is have multiple destinations. Though WDW and the other Star Tours would be better due to having 6 cabins, Disneyland should get these as new ride films:
Mustafar; where ghostly lightsaber duelists would be seen fighting on the lava river as you fall into the current. The two spirits would even fight atop the starspeeder deck. Endor;remade version of the original with the Death Star II replacing the old Death Star Tatooine; encounter podracers, the sarlacc, Bantha herds and a massive Krayt Dragon Naboo; travel through the planet core to Theed. |
