i dont have any info about this whole thing but at the end of last school year we were going to have a disney movie marathon for all of us 9th graders but it was canceled because of what your talking about. We actually had to send a letter to the Disney comp. asking them to let us watch them. Luckily my friends uncle works with Eisner().

Technically, videos are for private "home" viewing. Any public exhibition of them is illegal without permission.

That's what it says as a warning in Disney DVDS and VHS.

No one's suing Disneyland, Disneyland is suing nobody, sounds like the Walt Disney Company, owner of Disneyland & all other theme parks, allegedly sues Peoria School Disrict over the use of Disney DVD & Home Video. Disneyland itself has nothing to do with this. Every school I've been to has always played videos of movies in class & I never thought there was any problem. PSD isn't physically duplicating the video tape of the movies, so what difference is there between showing it in class & showing it to all your friends in your rumpus room? Classroom is a public place, ok, no profit is being made at all though. However, if the law states that the movie can only be shown in a private place, sucks for PSD. I think Disney is barking up the wrong tree here. Why go after a bloody public school district for no good reason but a technicality in the law? Horrible, horrible, PR move if it's true.

Uh...not too familiar with CA other than around DL, but are you talking about the Peoria School District in AZ or does CA have one too? We are in Glendale (AZ) School District, and as a matter of fact, I get asked frequently by my kids teachers if they can bring in a Disney movie, since I own a ton of them... Never been a problem here. Starting to feel a little guilty here, since it is supposed to be "private" viewing. School is "public" but as far as I know, it's only a class at a time watching them and obviously no profit is made. Matter of fact, my son just took Charlotte's Web (Not Disney) to school after reading their book. I never thought anything of it until now. It is such a shame though. The Disney "name" is the only one teachers trust not to have to had watched the entire movie prior to showing it in school. If it's Disney, it's "Safe". Bizarre...

You're misunderstanding the terms 'Public' and 'Private'. "Public" would mean that anyone could walk in off the street and watch your show. "Private" is like for a private audience. A private audience is comprised of those that are invited guests to your home (or classroom).

If the school district were to start charging money to watch the show, then it goes towards infringing on the copyrights having to do with 'profit', not the whole public vs. private thing (in other words, making a profit on something they do not hold the copyright or license for).

I seriously doubt that Disney is suing anyone one for showing videotapes of movies to a small group in a private setting, let alone school districts. More likely the school district itself is afraid that something might happen, and put a stop to Disney movies being shown. Principals and school districts are foreever in the news for making some boneheaded (and usually unconstitutional) decisions for fear of breaking some law that they know absolutely nothing about and having completely interpreted inappropriately.

^ That & deathly afraid of being sued by anyone. I mean, if there was a law that allowed me to sue the school for serving pizza because it made me have a heartattack, you wouldn't see a pizza within a 10 mile radius of any school.

Lightbulb Link to a reliable news resource, please.

Until I see a link to a news story, this thread is basically pointless. There's no use arguing a point that does not exist in reality. Now, if we are addressing it as a hypothetical (which it is, at this point), let's keep it in that context.

In other words, you could say something like: "In my opinion, IF disney were to sue the Peoria School District for showing a Disney home video on its premesis, that would be wrong." The entire point is that important "IF". There is no issue until there is an occurrence, wouldn't you agree? It's all a rumor.

Is there a link to even one news story that reports on these past lawsuits against the Peoria School District that were mentioned in the original post? No.

Just trying to make the point that gossip is not hard news. I just did a couple of Google searches for "Disney sues peoria schools", and even widened the search to "Disney sues schools", and got no results whatsoever.
