Default Any chance of an iphone app?

Has VF considered putting together an app that would allow iphone users to stream vf radio on their phone?

From what I've researched, our software (streaming and radio requests) isn't compatible with the sound formats that the iPhone/Touch uses at this time.

Could you use ShoutCast? I really don't care if you can request from iPhone/iPod personally but just to listen to the music.

Other request sites are on there streaming but with no way to request tracks.

You should be able to just download the Shoutcast DNAS and start streaming from your own server. Should only take about an hour.

This DNAS is not the Dynamic Network Authentication System used by DVD's and games but Shoutcasts proprietary Distributed Network Audio Software.

VF Radio is based on Icecast/Shoutcast, so this may be an option. I don't have an iPhone, so I can't say if this option works. Obviously you wouldn't be able to request with the iPhone, but listening might be an option:

INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO LISTEN TO VF RADIO ON AN IPHONE OR IPOD TOUCH

It is possible to listen to VF Radio on any iPhone or iPod Touch using the built in quicktime app on the iPhone software.

(Correct me if I'm wrong) Shoutcast runs on a specific port on the VF server so if you send safari to that URL and the quicktime "listen" playlist then your iPhone should automatically launch the quicktime player app and begin playing the playlist.

CLICK HERE ON YOUR IPHONE while in safari to listen to VF Radio on the go!

Keep in mind this works best when connected to Wifi instead of the Edge or 3G networks.

Chris, if this is popular can I make a suggestion to make a sub domain like iphone.visionsfantasic.com that would automatically forward to the address? (http://visionsfantastic.com:8000/listen.pls). Then all iPhone users whould have to do is type iphone.visionsfantastic.com in the safari browser and it would launch the radio.

I think that's certainly an option, DG. The one thing I fear is that people will go directly to the radio link and bypass the site entirely, eventually filling all 40 spots we have open that is really meant for our members, only.

We'll see what we can do about the sub domain. Has somebody actually been able to test it with their iPhone and Touch and verify that link loads correctly?

It works on my iPhone.

One other thing I was thinking about, is why not build a VF web-based app? I know right now that there are quite a few options for vBulletin and with more and more people switching to smart phones VF could use a mobile app update. There is a current mobile version of VF installed, but it is limited and doesn't let you login. This would also allow the user to come to VF and then choose to visit the radio instead of bypassing the site. You could make it a link available to logged in users only too. You could even incorporate ads into the app if you wanted to make a couple more bucks for the site!

Just some thoughts!

It works from my touch. Thanks for the link, I think building on this would be great.

The only bad thing about the touch/iPhone is that these apps take over and don't allow you to do extra browsing when listening to anything other than your music on the iPod.
This is an apple problem though.

Going to that link worked on my iphone and I can listen perfectly even on 3G connectivity

The one thing I can't seem to do is visit VF itself... every time I point Safari to it and I sign in I get a blank page with a little error message on it... does anyone know what might be wrong?

@ SPCMT my iPod logged in just fine and I could see the whole mobile part of the site. All that wouldn't load were the "flash" parts of the site.

I get the VF radio perfectly on my Ipod Touch using WiFi from my house or anywhere else.

I just can't watch videos or see the chatbox. Everything else works though. .
