Default Rocket Rods Gone For 6 Years

On this date six years ago, Disneyland officially retired the Rocket Rods. As a result, the closure of the ride turned out to be another "America Sings" and "Submarine Voyage" type of disaster -- no immediate replacement. Even now it is unclear on what will exactly happen to the former Peoplemover/Rocket Rod track. I'm dedicating this post in memory of an attraction that had potential to be a favorite.

"America Sings" / "Submarine Voyage" kind of disaster? Those closures were nothing like the Rods' closure. Neither one of those hardly ever worked properly and ultimately fractured the track they were on because of screwy budget revisions like the Rods did.

Sings was removed and the building was used for office space until the Innoventions idea brought the theatre back. Subs was closed with the promise it would be back in something like 3 years, only for that promise to not be fulfilled and the lagoon left awkwardly empty until June 11, 2007 when the Subs will reopen.

Rods was a nice idea but ultimately just didn't work on a track built for an elevated tour of Tomorrowland. It was a valuable learning experience and strong example of the problem of building attractions 'on the cheap'.

Being in the line for Rocket Rods was one of the worst experiences of my life, 3 hours and several shutdowns later I was on one of the worst rides I had ever been on.

Good riddance.

I hope they make a really high tech and awesome People Mover in its place.

Hopefully it will be like the TTT is in WDW if they were to bring back PM.

Argh, yes, I remember waiting in line for several hours for the Rocket Rods as well, only to find that the ride was a pathetic waste of time. Oh well.

I quite enjoyed the Rocket Rods when I rode them....however didn't see the big appeal to them that the park was trying to promote with their opening. I thought it was a bit jerky to ride it, but....all in all I enjoyed it. It didn't break my heart to hear that they shut it down....

They were best to be rode at night, after the fireworks when half the people go home and the wait is only 2 1/2 hours. :P

i have 2 disagree with all of you.

rocket rods was simply the best ride to ever exist.
i didnt mind the wait. i loved the ride sooo much, and was ultimately bummed out after learning that the ride was closed permanently.

i would do anything to bring rocket rods back.

i wish disney would consider taking the time to refurb the track, and fix it to where it can be capable for rocket rods to run on.

i would be relly depressed to see pm back, because my heart goes woth rocket rods, and i want it back!!!
but it doesent seem like that will be happeninng ever...

Rocket Rods opened in 1998 as part of the New Tomorrowland project. I remember going on it a few times, mostly as a single rider to bypass the line. We were there the day they closed. You could always hear them whirring and making noises on the track, and when we approached Tomorrowland, there was silence. Then, we saw the sign stating that the Rods would reopen in spring.

I would still love to see something like the TTA come to Disneyland. The Rods were pretty fun, but they went too fast in the pathways inside Tomorrowland buildings, so you couldn't enjoy the experience (going through Space Mountain in the dark, hearing people screaming). Before Alien Encounter closed in the Magic Kingdom back in 2003, their Tomorrowland was fairly polished and the TTA added to this atmosphere.

Ya know, if they bring pack peoplemover, Tommorowland will probably be closed down for the peoplemover contruction. Or there will be PLENTY of tarps to ruin the futureistic illusion.

I heard that they had in fact tried to re-open it, but since it was not handi-cap accessible, they were not allowed to do anything with it. So it just sat there.
