Wow... I had no idea that some people were so upset over the changes to TSI and POTC...
I want to know: I have never eaten in the Blue Bayou, only Club 33, and I was wondering if the food is the same or different?

When I heard rumors about Pirates of the Caribbean about to turn into a ride based off a movie that's inspired by that very same ride, I got angry. However, when I first saw a video of it, it looked pretty good, and I liked it when I got on the ride.

In another thread, someone mentioned about the ride not having much changes, honestly, not trying to be mean, but a couple of changes changed the ride significantly. It turned out from a pirate's life isn't good to a desperate search for Jack Sparrow.

I still haven't eaten in Blue Bayou, but I'm hoping to eat there for the first time with my true love.

Sincerely, a brother of a half-demon,
Sesshomaru-sama

I'm not exactly a musician so I don't know if I've have this firgured out correctly, but if new music didn't replace old music why am I hearing more minor chords? I dislike the cave music intensely(if the cave is when you see Davy Jones). It feels like phantom of the opera. The cave was so cool when it was basically silence and darkness, then, "Me thinks he knows too much....etc." and a cool breeze on the back of your neck, almost like a chill up your spine.

While I liked the POTC fine, I will always be a much bigger fan of the ride than the films. I think the fact that the ride was there long before the films and should have been more respected. I don't think the changes to it would have bugged me so much if they had been done in a more subtle way...i.e. not changing the soundtrack as much and if they had to bring in characters from the movie have them blend in more. I was actually happy though when I saw scenes in the first movie pay tribute to the movie (like the pirates jail scene). I think the commercialism of the ride is the main thing that bugs me, I wouldn't mind the changes so much if they weren't to just promote the movie/make more profit. Merchandise of the ride itself was fine, that's different. I guess my main thinking is like some have mentioned, before the ride was a focus of how pirate life was for several pirates, but with the modern updates it became a little too focused on Jack Sparrow IMHO. Even though it wasn't that popular to my knowledge Haunted Mansion had a movie in recent years, but people still think of the ride at DL and MK over the movie in that case and that's how it should be, IMHO. To me, even with the sucess of the movies, when I think of POTC, I will always think of the ride. I am someone who is able to go once a year if that much to Disneyland since I live in Colorado, but Pirates is still always a must see because despite it's changes it's still a classic to me. It's one of the first and most vivid memories I have of DL from my first visit at age 4 and even though it has changed a lot, the fact is that it was still the last thing Walt worked on.

As for Tom Sawyer Island/"Pirate's Lair", like many, I feel it was best left in its classic state. I have been to Pirate's Lair and it isn't that it is so horrible. The thing is that I felt like it was one of the older classic parts of DL and the stories of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn were valuable things to show to children of our era. I also feel like with all the extra pirate stuff around New Orleans Square and TSI (or at least was there when I was last at DL in late Dec./early Jan.), it almost takes away from the specialness and uniqueness of the POTC ride. With the obvious exception of Toon Town, it's nice that all the lands have different things/stories to offer. Adventureland has the Tiki Room, Aladdin's Oasis, Indian Jones, Tarzan's Tree House, and Jungle Cruise for example. The variety makes it nice.

I like both versions of the ride. But I like the updated one better. It gave me more reason to ride it and is now my 3rd favorite ride at Disneyland. They did not change the ride that much. All they really did was add to the ride. I do not see what the big complaint is. They have the lyrics now after the first drop. I like the music at the battle scene it is one of my favorite soundtracks.

Hallucination

Might that be Davy Jones I'm seein' on Pirates of the Carribean?
I should have skipped that last mimosa, 'cause now I'm seein' ol' Barbossa
And pierce my heart with poisoned arrow, could that be Captain Jackie Sparrow?
I spy him once, I spy him twice and by the end I spy him thrice
The devil take me! Is this real? Oh no! I hear a different spiel!

Is this a lasting transformation? Perhaps it's an hallucination
I pray the latter but I fear that things are just as they appear
I feel a sharp pain in my side, why have they changed my favorite ride?
I'll go out and get some air. Oh my lord, it's Pirate's Lair! What are pirates doing there?

Sometimes I fail to understand the changes made at Disneyland.

Beautifully said!!! Although I love that creative look at many a DL fan's look at the new POTC, I love both versions. I miss the nostalgia of the old ride, but the new AA's of Sparrow and Barbossa, as well as the AMAHZING Davy Jones effect are eerily accurate. I must admit that I am a fence-sitter on this topic.

Okay, moving on. Which Movie was the best for you? And why?

I must say the second one was the best, because it introduced us to the Awesomely Cool Tia Dalma!!! And there was 3x the comedy in the 2nd one than the 1st one.

Unfortunately good technology doesn't necessarily mean it's a good effect for the ride. While the Davy Jones thing is fantastic unto itself, it detracts from the Pirates of the Caribbean because not only are there no other live-action projection effects like that in the ride, but there are no other squid monsters either. He is a total non-sequiter... Before him are statues of pirate skeletons, after him are animatronics of live pirates. No projections, no squids.

I'd compare it to Constance in the Haunted Mansion. She is fanastically advanced, but she is an advancement on a technology that is present elsewhere in the Mansion. By the time you reach her, you've already seen Leota and are going to be seeing the Singing Busts and Little Leota. Plus, the ghost bride character has always been a part of the attraction.

Jones, who is just some squid monster thing from the second Pirates movie, just doesn't fit. And on top of it, he even contradicts the 40-year theme of the ride. No Davy, DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES! ^_^

Okay, moving on. Which Movie was the best for you? And why?
The first one was hands-down the best. It was a perfect mix of characterization, action and skeleton pirates. In the writer's commentary track on the DVD, they talked about how they approached it as an old fashioned studio film from the 1930's or 40's, and it shows. It is every bit as sheerly enjoyable as films from that era. The dialogue is sharp, the characters distinct and well-defined, the action is well choreographed, the actors embraced the roles, and did I mention it had skeleton pirates? After I saw it for the first time, I slouched back in my seat and wondered that they still made movies THAT gosh darn entertaining. Despite all the controversy over the ride and the latter films, The Curse of the Black Pearl is still one of my all-time favorite Disney films, and probably their best live action one since 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

Then came the increasing awfulness of the second and third parts. It's like they completely forgot what made the first one so good. The villains were shiftless and felt irrelevant, and the characters we knew already were just resting on their laurels from the first film. They don't develop, they don't emote, just nothing happens. The second one was just not very interesting, and I actually did check my watch halfway through. The third one gave up entirely and just decided that instead of keeping the engaging characters and witty dialogue behind an old fashioned Hollywood adventure film, they would try their hand at an overblown, deathly serious, mythologised epic like Lord of the Rings (which also sucked). What I cared about was cool swordfights with skeleton pirates, Jack Sparrow's banter with Barbossa, and whether or not the lovers kiss at the end. I didn't care about Calypso, the Pirate Lords, Cutler Beckett or the heart of Davy Jones.

[/rant]

That all said, if they do make a fourth one, I hold out some hope that maybe they'll recognize where they went wrong. I'm willing to give a sky-pirate hunt through dinosaur-laden forests to find the Fountain of Youth a shot, if it has the same kind of excellent and entertaining writing as the first film. It's not like I want to not like Pirates of the Caribbean.

I agree, CoryTheRaven!!!! The first one DID have the best banter between characters and the most suspense. My mind has been changed in the short period of 5 days. I see the error of my foolish ways

I love this! Just wondering if Walt came to you in a dream and spoke this words. Perhaps they would be his sentiments.

Thank you. I was thinking of it as a song that the Lair Pirates could sing to those guests who are less than pleased. The last line would be repeated over and over with a request for the guests to join in!

Sry I havent been on in a while. ( school stuff)
My opinion of the POTC w/ Johnny is that it is a great edition. Although my children will never know the Old Pirates we know and fondly remember, they will grow up to see an era of new Disney classics to love and cherish the way we do.
(end of sermon) =D

It would be nice if Blackbeard was still on the Wicked Wench ship. It could show that Captain Jack Sparrow has messed with him, since Captain Barbossa doesn't show up in the rest of the ride.

I like the water effects, though. It's nice to see them go high up.

As for the movies, I would prefer the first film. Even though it had scenes from the ride, the movie is pretty original. It went on its own course instead of trying to show every single thing the ride has that causes the film to not make sense at all. When I first got the first film on DVD, I watched it over and over again. I couldn't do that with the last two movies. They just lacked in something.

Sincerely, a brother of a half-demon,
Sesshomaru-sama

Not sure what this has to do with anything, but I just remembered that when my sister was little she used to call it Carrots of the Pyrobean.

"Daddy? Can we ride Carrots of the Pyrobean?"

Soon everyone in my family was calling it that. It still makes me laugh.

Now that's just silly. I shouldn't be posting at 2am!
