Default Pedestrian Bridge

Mods: I wasn't sure where to put this, so please move it if necessary.

I was thinking about the hotels around the Disneyland Resort and the one crosswalk on Harbor that crosses into the Disneyland Resort entrance. I think it would be nice if they built a pedestrian bridge in that place. In my experience, there's always been a ton of people just waiting to be able to cross there. A bridge would provide a continous flow of people into the resort.

Is there a law or something that would prevent that? Or is it just a situation where it isn't on the top of Disney's or the City of Anaheim's list?

are you talking about the bridge that crosses from the disneyland hotel into downtown disney? there is a bridge that does that from the hotel into downtown disney. most of the time people use the bridge from the hotels at disneyland. it would be hard to build a bridge from harbor blvd.

How about an Underground Pedestrian Walkway?

Well I was more thinking for the offsite hotel guests on Harbor. It would just take you from one side of the street to the other, like they have on the Las Vegas strip.

That could work as well, although I would imagine that would be quite a bit more expensive.

You'd need a TON of space for one of these bridges as they'd need escalator and elevator services on both sides. Harbor is crammed enough as it is. There's no way a project of this size could work without massive crampings and detours.

Are you talking about one of those bridges the Mickey and friends parking structure has to get to one structure to another?

That's a good point. I could see them maybe reworking and fitting something in on the DLR side, since there really isn't much at the entrance itself, but the other side would be a tight squeeze.
Maybe the tunnel idea would actually be more feasible, but it would definitely be more expensive and maybe require them to close that part of the road for awhile. This is probably why they haven't done anything...

Sort of, except it's only purpose would be to cross Harbor Blvd. And it would have stairs/escalators/elevators to get you back down to street level.

I keep thinking of the Pedestrian Bridges in Las Vegas & trying to imagine that on Harbor Blvd & I just can't. There's so much sidewalk space on Las Vegas Blvd and its cross streets & even more space in the corners of the intersections that they can accomodate whatever they need. Harbor Blvd is pretty much the 180 degree opposite. Especially that area where Harbor & Disney Way intersect at the entrance to Timon.

If it wasn't Disneyland, you could have a small bridge built with stairs-only access, but that won't fly at all in this case.

If they built a simple pedestrian bridge that was maybe 8 -12 feet wide and caged in, that wouldn't be to bad. They wouldn't have to have elevators and escalators because there would still be a crosswalk. This would just alleviate some of the foot traffic in the cross walk.

I think it's a pretty good idea.

^ But that's what I mean when I say you'd hear no end of the yelling. Disabeled people & all the organizations behind them would slander Disney all over the news for only alleviating risk of getting hit by a car for 'normal' people & leaving disabled people at even more risk now because less people are using the crosswalk. Disney would really take a bad PR hit there & you know the re-thinking of the Special Assistance Card program would be spun to further hurt them at the same time.

Cool safe and accessable.

Here in Portland we have some pedestrian overpasses that have wheelchair lifts. They're sort of like a miniature elevator. It doesn't take up too much room, but the footprint of the bridge itself is a real hog!

Underground pedestrian passes are hardly ever built anymore. If a pedestrian is victim of a crime in one of those tunnels, it's unlikely that it will be witnessed. It's just not very secure in that regard. Of course this one would be very busy, but picture a lone CM going through it at 1:30am and you get the picture

I thought about just having stairs, but like Matt said, that wouldn't even be a possibility being at Disneyland.

The only underground pass I've ever seen is one at Silverwood Theme Park in Idaho, that connects the parking lot to the park entrance. Crime isn't really an issue there, but I can imagine it being more of a problem in Anaheim. Although, maybe Disney could have a couple of security guards posted in and around the tunnel.

The problem with the one in Idaho is that it basically feels like you're walking in a sewer. I would hope if Disney ever decided to build one, they would attempt to make it pleasing to the eye.

Didn't really think about it this way, but there are people out there who would jump at the chance to get a lawsuit out of it. I still think it's a good idea from the stand point of what it could do for the cross walk traffic though.

I dont think it is possible at the moment to build an underground walkway under Harbor anyway. There is a backstage tunnel that connects the two parks that runs parallel to Harbor and right up against the street. Hmmm...

Well...

Harbor Blvd. and Disneyland Drive is a busy intersection. Don't they have crosswalks so pedestrians can cross safely?
