Default Our Space Mountain... and then there's Hong Kong's

Before I say something, I want to say that our Space Mountain is still my favorite ride ever, and I'll try not to compare it to Hong Kong's but knowing me, that's what I'll probably end up doing. Anyways...

I've seen pictures and even a video with the lgiths on and off (of Space MOuntain in Hong Kong, and then I see videos of our Space Mountain, we have the same layouts, but I see differences. Hong Kong's Space Mountain has meteors scattered everywhere, they have stuff like meteor showers, effects on the 'big drop', etc. Why don't we have those? Is it because of budget? Or maybe because Hong Kong had a longer time to Imagineer all these things? IMHO, we should at least have some of what they have, after all, it is Disneyland Aneheim's 50th Birthday.

I don't know if there is a good factual reason why we don't have these, but it would be nice to see some ideas.

Once again, I tried my hardest not to compare, but to make a point. If I sounded like I was comparing the two, I didn't mean to. Although, it is easier to compare two Space Mountains (rather than Matterhorn and Expedition Everest, like I did in the past =] )

I also <3 our Space Mountain...

Yeah, I thought ours was supposed to be designed after Hong Kong's. Apparently not...

Well keep in mind.... (yes I know its 99.99 confirmed) if Rockit Mountain should arise, we might see new effects that Hong Kong doesn't have. Also if the rumors turn out to be true... then we'll actually have two different attractions within the same ride... which by my math... makes ours two times more unique.

Well, they had to throw Hong Kong a bone. Their park has like five rides.

Think about it, Hong Kong's was origanally built after ours. Then ours was remodeled after Hong Kongs. So yes, If Disneyland was going tho get new meteor (Rocks) effects, then they would probly be in 'Rock'It Mountain.

You also have to realize that Anaheim's Space Mountain was designed and built in the late 70s, so there might be issues with the design and structure of the ride that prohibit any additions on the caliber of those at Hong Kong (or, any other Space Mountain for that matter).

if you really want to get into it, space mountain in paris has a blast off launch instead of a drop and it has a loop.

The reason we are only comparing the Space Mountain in Disneyland and Hong Kong is because they are the same ride...(same ride track)... but different effects and stuff.

You need to also remember that the origanal Space Mountain for Disneyland (V1.0), was going to include other effects, but do to lack of bugget that got left out. Some of the origanal plans included projections, and a giant rotating tunnel up the big hill (Space Mountain v2.0 has a projection system of the giant rotating tunnel). The tunnel got left out of the origanal plans because it is very hard to get a very long object, suspended, rotating with cars going though it.

I believe the main reason many special effects found in HK's SM were left out was because the DL SM refurb was supposed to last a lot longer than it did (with the ride re-opening in dec. 2005 as opposed to july) anyways..... Matt Ouimet put the SM refurb on the fast track so it could open for DL's 50th weekend..... thats just a possible suggestion... I know that the subs are also already WAY over budget so maybe that, and the new much needed enhancements in DCA, had something to do with the SM budget cuts. Anywho... here's to hoping we see some added features during the next refurb!

If you saw the lights-on portion of the HK space mountain video, you can see if you look carefully, that there are actually projecting screens set up throughout the ride, to create a surface to project all of that imagery on.

Well, I was always under the impression that Rockit Mountain wouldn't necessarily be as dark as Space Mountain, and that these flat white screens would potentially be visible.

Perhaps I am just searching for excuses.

Well, the most popular rumor about it you'll hear is that it's destined for running during the night-time daily. What exactly that means, how exactly it'll be done, how they're going to manage 2 attractions in 1 on a daily basis, no idea there.
