I won't miss it... haven't been on the ride in 3 years despite yearly trips to DL. I think a face lift would be good for those that enjoy this ride, as long as they just fix the ride, not change/add anything.

I can't say I'd be too broken hearted. I don't have any kids but, I enjoy the ride every now and then, so I wouldn't want it shut down completely or anything, but I'd manage to survive if it were closed for 9 months.

I gasped when I heard the news that it may be down for up to nine months. My daughter is 18 months old and she loves that ride, as do I. It does need some major attention, I am afraid my daughter is going to forget it so I plan to video it and play it for her so she does not forget. I want to film the regular version and the Christmas overlay. That was the version she first saw at nine months and my mom was singing to her a silly version of Deck the Halls but with the words, "It's the baby's very first Christmas, fa la la laaaaa la la la!" She recognized the song on the ride and looked at me all surprised and if she could talk, her face totally said, "Hey, I know that song!" Such a special moment for me........

I have a friend who works at the park and she said she had not heard of any major changes but she said the boats were in need of repair, she said that some of them were retaining water, they were leaking bad.

There is a Disney sing-along video called Disneyland Fun that shows kids going on Disneyland attractions. It's a Small World is on the video. You might be able to order it on Amazon. I don't know if it available in a DVD, though.

I have two of them. I bought the movie twice on accident.

I can't say I would mind it being closed too much although I do love the Holiday overlay they do for IASM. What I think would be cool is if they added into the ride the music from the original way the song was supposed to be. It was more like a ballad. Which I know people will say kids would hate it but I think the music is really pretty. Plus the song the way it is now drives me crazy! We once got stuck on there for about 20 minutes...after about 5 minutes people started jokingly saying "turn the music off". It was actually pretty funny and I will always remember that night :)

It's just like the time they remodled Space Mountain it'll be really fast. Besides, there are other rides right?

Space Mountain was closed for a refurb for two years. I would hate to see IASW be closed that long.

Default DLR's 'small world' refurb for heavier people

Disneyland's 'small world' to be retooled for bigger people

Disney comes unstuck

Sydney Morning Herald
American kids are officially too fat, and we have the Disney company's word for that. Disneyland in California has announced it will close its most popular ride, it's a small world, for renovations due to increased wear and tear caused by super-sized riders.

The ride features small boats that wend their way along canals while small robots sing in several languages. But since the ride opened in 1964 the average American has become 11 kilograms heavier, and now the boats in the ride are scraping the bottom and stopping midstream, causing extensive delays. Employees have tried to remedy this, by "discreetly" leaving empty seats on boats carrying bigger riders, but back ups have persisted.

The canals will be made deeper and boats will be replaced with more buoyant models.

Question iasw refurb? fit or fat?

Disneyland's calendar does show a closure starting on January 22nd, but that would be to remove the Holiday overlay. It goes through February 28th, but the March calendar is not up yet. In other words, I don't know if it will just be the usual post-Holiday closure or something more.

By the way, part of the Pirates of the Caribbean upgrade was re-working the flume canals, probably for the same reason ? Americans weigh more than we used to. If you remember, when it first re-opened boats were backing up and getting stuck at the top of the first drop because they handn't quite got it right.

American's do weigh more now, but I do resent the writer's "fat kids" remark. Americans weigh more now than in the mid-1960s partly because we're more athletic than we used to be. Alot of people use a gym several times a week now, and carry more dense muscle weight around than people used to. I don't remember anyone I know going to a gym in the 70s.

That's awful. kids need to start doing excersize beyond exercising their thumbs. I used to be just like that, but i got into tennis and started losing wieght. but come on people. you're costing a company money because you're too fat. get it together. ( on top of injuring yourself)

thanks PMM

^ You think only Disney's in trouble because people are becoming fatter & lazier than ever? We're all in BIG trouble. I work at a hospital now. I've seen the effects and I can not imagine the overall impact it's having on all of us, our finances, and the health care system. We're securing ourselves to the handbasket, and we're about to head to a place you can probably guess where...in that handbasket.

Childhood obesity is something we'd all like to ignore and pretend isn't happening, but it is. We'd like to give little Timmy and Tammy all the hamburgers and french fries they want, but we just can't. The parents are the only ones who can really do something. Don't wait for the fast food companies to change, don't want for the government to impose something, parents always have the ability to say 'no'. True parents don't have unlimited abilities, but they ought to be doing everything that is within their abilities to prevent further spread of childhood obesity.

Hopefully word of this refurb, and one of the main reasons why it needs to happen, will spread and affect some change.

Let's not forget that once your parents stop shopping and making your meals, it is our responsibility to keep ourselves fit as tween, teenagers, and adults. Larger children do not always become larger adults. As adults we let stress, work and daily life get in the way of healthy eating and excercise. Im not the smallest here but I work everyday on keeping myself fit and eating right.

I personally believe that if I was not able to fit on a rollercoaster and I loved rollercoasters, I would want to fix that and be able to ride what I wanted when I wanted. I feel that making the boats "more buoyant" isn't helping anyone here, only enabling life style choices. Embarrassing and as awkward as it may be to be told "Im sorry, you can't ride" would just maybe give motivation to that person to do something about it. This is not Disneyland's job to fix the world obesity problem but like fast food joints, it isn't helping anyone.

But YAY for new boats!!!
