Me too. I think they are there to give a feeling of a sea port.

i think the story was something like when they were building the new orleans area they went to a city to sketch it and they were told to draw (then build) exactly what they saw. there was a ship with sails in the background, so they drew it and then they built it!
(... i think....) =/

Honestly... I have never noticed them. BUT! NOS is not a favorite of mine. Aside from Fantasmic!, HM and Clam Chowder... I stay away

I think they add to the flavor of the Land. You can see them great from the Texas Deck of the Mark Twain!

Along with adding a marvelous flavor to the little area, it also has a purpose and use. The sails hide lights for Fantasmic! I got to sit in the VIP zone for Fantasmic! twice over the past couple months and both times I asked what the sails were used for and the sound/lighting techs (both different) said the same thing.

I can confirm this, i know a lighting tech for F!, and he has been around since before it premiered.
