He launched the career of Dana Daniels, 47, who won "Stage Magician of the Year" at this week's Academy of Magical Arts Awards Show. By doing nothing. His secret? To unlock this mystery, we drift back to 1995: Daniels has just asked to perform a one-man variety show at Disneyland's Golden Horseshoe and is told, "One-man shows don't work here." With one sentence he changes their minds. "How about a variety show where none of the acts show up, and the guy who mops the floors has to save the day and do all the acts?" Same idea: a one-man show. Same star: Daniels. Opposite reaction: "I love it!" the director says. "When can you start?" The difference? Daniels introduced something as old as mankind. He explains: "It was like, the show's starting and you find out none of the acts are there. It's a story. And Disney likes that kind of thing." We all do.
