Default Disney Cruise to Alaska considered

Disney Cruise to Alaska considered

Disney Cruise Line is considering Alaskan cruises

Orlando Sentinel
Disney Cruise Line is apparently considering cruises in Alaska. Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve in Alaska revealed last week that Disney is one of half a dozen cruise companies that have submitted proposals seeking contracts to sail in the park sometime between Jan. 1, 2010, and Sept. 30, 2019.

Other prominent companies competing for some of the limited number of "cruise ship use days" in Glacier Bay include Holland America Line and Norwegian Cruise Line. A representative for Glacier Bay said contracts will likely be awarded near the end of the year.

Question A question about Alaska cruises.

I have been wondering about this for a loooooong time.

Why do all cruise ships seem to go to Alaska? What is it about it that's so fascinating?

I would love to have someone who has been on an Alaska cruise of any kind to give the details that make it such an attractive destination to so many cruise lines.

I understand the more tropical-type cruises. It's warm, there are tons of places to stop off and visit the local cultures, etc, etc, etc.

It seems like going to Alaska would have these things: It would be cold, there would be miles and miles and miles of uninhabited coastline, when you get to Alaska there most likely isn't a whole lot to do (and you'd have to dress like a lunar-landing astronaut to keep from freezing), and nobody really seems to address the fact that there are ICEBERGS out there (Helloooo, Titanic!).

So, what is it about Alaskan cruises that I am missing? I know that because I haven't done it, I don't know the advantages. Could someone fill me in on why I would take an Alaskan cruise rather than take one to the Florida Keys / Disney World? I am just not able to understand it...

I wouldn't mind bundling up like an astronaut just to see some of the sites there that are uninhabited by man. I find seeing those far better than seeing what man has created. I would also bet it depends on the time of year that you go on this kind of cruise.

List of cruise destinations I would love to do:
Norwegian Fjords.
Bahamas.
Alaskan.
Caribbean.

But I would so love to take a week on the QE2. That would be awesome.

My mom and dad took a tropical cruise for their honeymoon twenty-five years ago, and now my mom's only restriction for cruises is she wants to go to Alaska, so I'm stoked. I mean, I'll be in college or out of college during the time frame they're asking for, but that would be awesome. And it's an excuse to wear jeans on a cruise.

My boyfriend went on a cruise to Alaska with his family back in July and he had a great time! I saw his pictures and they were beautiful! You really get to see nature up close and personal. They have charming ports that you pull in to with great shops and good food. When he went it was raining slightly but it was bearable. He took a mountain biking excursion where they take you up a mountain and then let you ride the whole way down. He said it was the best bike ride he's ever had because the scenery was just so breathtaking. He got to see whales and Mendenhall Glacier. I personally would love to go on an Alaskan cruise, especially by Disney! I went on a cruise to the Mexican riviera with my family this summer as well and we were sailing on Royal Caribbean cruises, however, the Disney cruise line was sailing along with us. Their ship looked like so much fun! I definitely want to plan my next cruise with Disney!

Speaking as a nature fanatic, that's something I've wanted to do for awhile. The view there is gorgeous, and I'd really love to take a trip up there to the national parks and also to go whale watching.

I have heard if you go more doing the summer, it's not THAT cold and it's supposedly very beautiful. Personally, I'd rather go some where tropicial, but to each their own. Probably a good idea on Disney's part though.

Thumbs down

I would love to go on a disney cruise in Alaska! While I haven't been on an Alaskan cruise ship, I have been to Alaska during the summer and it is beautiful there! There are so many places where you are surrounded by bald eagles, and other wildlife creatures you can't see in the wild anywhere else! However, it must be stated that the cruises happen only in the summer because no one wants to go when you have 20 hr nights and rain and snow all day long! But, if you want sun and heat, an Alaskan cruise isn't for you! I hope Disney does have a cruise line there! It SHOULD be cheaper than their other cruises, just 'cause it's in Alaska!

^Why not? Everybody's doing it right? How else could those people afford to go on a cruise.

Well, I've never been on an Alaska cruise, or any cruise for that matter, but I do know a few people who have gone. They go during the summer, and you get very nice views of all the mountains, and its not that bad of a temperature.
Also one of the curise line has a train that travels between the ports, and each port has a huge lodge, and they all look great. Lots of people don't even curise, they just travel on the train from one of the lodges to the next, and then back. I believe the Rail Line starts out in ancorage. Pretty cool stuff.
