Disney cancels 'Narnia' series, Walden seeking new partner

Disney jumps ship on next 'Narnia'

Reuters
'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader' will have to sail without Disney. The third entry in the series, based on the classic books by C.S. Lewis, was in preproduction and set for a spring shoot for a planned May 2010 release.

The studio said Tuesday that for budgetary and logistical reasons it will not exercise its option to co-produce and co-finance the next Narnia movie with producer Walden Media. The development puts the participation of the talent attached in doubt.

Walden has a strong relationship with the Lewis estate and will shop "Treader" in hopes of finding a new partner. The most likely candidate at this stage is Fox, which markets and distributes Walden fare under the Fox Walden banner.

Wow... I really don't know what to say to that. Disney seems to be really looking at spending and saving right now for sure. Although I think this is not the best move for them I really hope they made a wise decision.
So far no company has made all 7 books into a series. All of them seem to end at the Dawn Treader which really is sad. Hopefully Fox will pick up on this and finish the series.

Well, the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe were the most popular two of the books, I think, and with the lack of success Prince Caspian had compared to LWW, I don't blame them for it. It's a hard sell, it's hard to produce, and they have bigger and better fish to fry at the moment. It's a recession, it's the time you cut your losses while you can. With all the films they have slated for the next five years, I don't blame them for lightening the load.

Most likely, guru. Disney means that unless another huge studio backs them, they're not going to be able to make it as nice as before, meaning the same talent might not come back because they might not get as much money.

I don't exactly know what to say to that. I haven't seen Prince Caspian so I can't exactly say anything. I like LWW though, but I honestly can't say a thing about this.

I agree, believe. I have only seen the first movie in the series but didn't have an interest in Prince Caspian. Oh well, I hope the series can be continued for the Narnia fans though.

I'm sad to hear this. I really enjoyed both movies and thought they were beautifully made. Hopefully whoever steps in will do as nice of a job.

I actually don't mind. A question floating in my mind was how long until they pulled a Harry and made the movies PG13 (maybe now lol)

Honestly I'm not surprised. PC was okay in my oppinion but it wasn't as good was LWW. I think PC's biggest problem was how big the changes in Narnia were after the kids left. Things like that are hard to sell and with only two of the main characters returning in book 3, those who haven't read the books may not be interested.

Well, I'm oddly content with this decision. If Disney needs to cut back and save money then I'm glad they are choosing to drop Narnia instead of more important things (ie DLR).
