'The Little Mermaid' to close on Broadway

Disney's 'The Little Mermaid' to close on Broadway 8/30
National tour planned For 2010

Disney's The Little Mermaid will play its final Broadway performance on Sunday, August 30th after 50 previews and 685 performances at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. The Little Mermaid was the #1 selling new Broadway musical of 2008, amassing sales of over $78 million to date. The show has been seen by over 921,000 people so far and will welcome its 1 millionth guest this summer.

The production team has begun work on a national tour, slated to launch in fall 2010.

Can't say how relieved I am!

As far as a Hunchback Musical, there was actually one that ran for awhile in Germany, but it never made it to the US. I'll be interested to see what they'll come up with next.

Any of you heard the rumors of a Nightmare Before Christmas musical? The rumor is ancient (back to Eisner) but I'm all for it. The puppetry would be nothing short of astounding. I'd love to see it on stage!

Many Broadway shows start in a big central theater, then if the show is popular enough and get a good response from the audiences the production may decide to go on a national tour. It was popular, thats why its going on tour! This is giving people around the country a chance to see a musical they may not get to see because of location. I for one am VERY thrilled that it will be touring.

^ Then why don't they do both? Wicked, Phantom, Avenue Q, Mary Poppins, The Lion King (to name a few)... they're all on tour and Broadway.

And the Lunt-Fontanne is so small; were they not performing to capacity?

At first, I thought they weren't going to be showing this show anymore, but as I grew to understand the situation and what will happen more, I'm pretty excited! I want to see this show, definitely!

YES!

This show really was only good for bringing some more Menken music to soundtrack, and now that it's served that purpose, let's make way from something that actually works as a good show overall.
